This is a two platform station in the south west of Edinburgh.
The station, the third of its name, replaces the earlier Slateford [2nd] station which was to the west.
Slateford Station signal box remained to the west at the previous station as the goods yard remained open. The box was on the south side of the line in the goods yard.
The box was replaced with another on the same site in 1910. It was replaced when, to the west of the station, a branch opened to Gorgie Cattle Market [CR].
To the east of the station is Slateford Junction where a British Railways built curve runs to Craiglockhart Junction on the Edinburgh, Suburban and Southside Junction Railway. Slateford Yard is to the east, in the 'V' of the junction.
