Opened on the St Andrews Junction Line (North British Railway). This was an island platform station located below street level. In addition to the two faces of the island platform, there was a loading dock at the north end, with a short section of platform alongside the southbound line. Also known as the new station.
The station building on the island platform was heavily canopied. It was approached by a footbridge from either side and steps down to street level. The signal box (1887) was on the west side of the dressed stone cutting.
The station was on the western edge of the town.
The station replaced the St Andrews [1st] terminus which became a goods station.
The trackbed north west to the old terminus was prepared for possible doubling, although a second line was not laid (St Andrews Junction Line (North British Railway)). This line was laid by the North British Railway to the second station to meet the Anstruther and St Andrews Railway which ran south from the new station.
The station was burned down in 1901 (3 July) as a result of suspected arson, just a few days after a fire at the original station St Andrews [1st]. The new station buildings were completed in 1903.
To the south of the station site is the Kinness Burn Viaduct.
Local stations between here and Crail closed in 1930.
The station became a terminus after closure of the line south in 1965.
The signal box closed in 1967. The line down the west side of the platform was lifted. The line closed in 1969.
Following closure the station site became a carpark, the trackbed on either side of the island being infilled.
The campaign to reinstate the railway to St Andrews is StARLink .
St Andrews Bus Station is to the east of the former station site.
