Opened on the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. This was a two platform on the south side of a level crossing. The main station building was on the southbound (east) platform, the Netherton side of the railway. A smaller building was on the northbound platform.
The goods yard was on the east side, approached from the south. The signal box was on the north side of the level crossing, on the east side.
Station cottages remain on the east side of the station site, the former entry to the goods yard.
