Stockholm Central (1871-)

Description

This large station opened on the Junction Railway which connected the state built lines Västra Stambanan (Western Main Line) and Norra Stambanan (Northern Main Line).

The junction line was not cheap to build involving from south to north: a tunnel, bridge with a swing portion, fixed bridge, second bridge with a swing portion and large station on reclaimed land. There were intentionally no level crossings. The connection brought together lines at the narrows at the east end of the Lake Mälaren which stretches 75 miles to the west and drains into the Baltic Sea to the east.

Re-construction of the station by 1927 resulted in the moving of the lines to the west allowing the original trainshed to become the circulating area.
