Description

This station opened on the 1890 Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway. It was a two platform station on the double track line from Lydford [LSW] to Devonport Kings Road which gave the London and South Western Railway an independent railway to Devonport and Plymouth. It was the second station in Tavistock after Tavistock [GWR] of 1849.

The main station building was on the southbound platform. The goods yard was to the north east, on the north side of the line.

The station survived Tavistock [GWR] which closed to passengers in 1962. Closure was in 1968 when the LSWR through route closed between Bere Alston (excluded) and Meldon Quarry.

The main station building survives today. The former goods yard site is now occupied by council offices.

To the immediate south west is the surviving disused Tavistock Viaduct.

Although a re-opening is projected from Bere Alston to Tavistock the proposed station site is just under a mile south west of the former station. The line would be single track with a one platform station south of Callington Road (the A390).
