Major multi-million-pound repairs to the iconic Royal Border Bridge are being extended into 2023 to make the centuries-old structure strong and reliable for future generations to enjoy. Network Rail engineers have risen to the challenge of working with the 170-year-old landmark so far. With over 2.5 million bricks stretching up to 40 metres high, the full extent of the repairs was hard to pinpoint from the ground.

The Royal Border Bridge at Berwick-upon-Tweed is a well-loved landmark on the East Coast Main Line, located just to the south of the towns station. It is to be repaired throughout 2022 in a major Network Rail project to repair all 28 arches of the Grade I listed viaduct.

In 1850 the completion of the Royal Border Bridge, linking the two banks of the River Tweed at Berwick, was the final piece of the jigsaw that saw the East Coast Main Line link London with Edinburgh.

The LNE&EM route Structures asset management team is trialling the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to inspect large structures in a safer and more cost efficient way.
The vehicles, commonly known as drones, are being used to get a closer look at five arch viaducts on the route, including the Grade 1 listed, 28-span Royal Border Bridge in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland.
