Channel Tunnel Shakespeare Cliff: A view up to the top of Adit A2 the main access to the underground workings before the ventilation and lift shaft was completed. The triple-track rack-railway ascended a steep incline 1 in 7; there was space for road vehicles and pedestrians to the left. Imagine having to tackle this on foot after walking for ages all the way from the cutting face several kilometres away out under the sea. In the early days if you did not catch the manrider train at the end of the tunnellers' shift this was the fate that awaited you...
Channel Tunnel Shakespeare Cliff: A view of the clean and bright-looking Land Service Tunnel heading uphill approximately south west towards the Castlehill Portal and the Cheriton Terminal see image [[72441]]. The solid catenary 'wire' (copper-coloured bar) which carried the 550v DC supply to power the electric locos can be seen suspended from the crown. The yellow tube was for carrying blown air further along the tunnel.
Channel Tunnel Shakespeare Cliff: Schöma 'second hand locomotives from previous projects in Switzerland' working side by side in the Land Service Tunnel. Not visible behind these diesels is a portable crossover assembly with ramps which the locos were dragging into a new position over the two sets of narrow gauge tracks.
Channel Tunnel Shakespeare Cliff: Marine Running Tunnel North TBM Erection Chamber - a long name for a long cavern. This is where the Tunnel Boring Machine for one of the main railway tunnels was being assembled in 1989. The chamber itself was excavated with the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) approach to design and monitoring. Compare the size of this with the Land Service Tunnel see image [[76856]]. The two construction railway tracks in both images were of the same gauge, 900mm. The overall size of the chamber was, of course, greater than that of the tunnel bored by the completed TBM.
Channel Tunnel Shakespeare Cliff: This image shows the early type of motive power that was in use and, as far as I know, is not shown elsewhere. A typical underground construction train consisting of flatbed wagons stacked with sacks of cement and bentonite clay (followed by empty muck wagons not shown) heading for the TBM. The loco was designed to operate either from overhead power supply (pantograph shown folded down behind driver's cab next to the orange light) or from the large onboard batteries. At the time of this shot battery-power was in use due to salty water dripping in from the tunnel crown making the catenary system inoperable. Another similar loco was marshalled on at the rear end of the consist. Thus, if one were very sneaky, I mean careful, one could get an (unofficial) hurl in the empty cab to save the hour of walking back to the Marshalling Area but one still needed to climb out of the tunnel up the steep ramp see image [[76831]]. This type of loco was the predecessor of the Hunslet electric locos which took over the underground haulage later in the project see the background of Colin's image [[50172]]

This picture was taken from the cut back Up Main Line platform. All stopping services now use the Furness Line platforms that are only accessible through the subway.
Carnforth: Coaling towers were once a distinctive skyline feature in many places but are very rare now. The tower at Carnforth is a concrete post-war structure and survives in the West Coast Railway depot although it is no longer operational. It is seen here from Carnforth station car park with the depot water tower alongside. The old main line platforms and the subway entrance can be seen to the left of the station building, which now houses a travel centre booking office and small businesses.
Rugeley: Freightliner 90046 heads north near Rugeley on 26 January, with Hamburg Sud containers predominant at the front of the train.

Rufford: Has the cascade of Centro Sprinters to Northern allowed the Ormskirk bubble cars to be replaced or was this appearance of 150269 a one-off? The 150 has just arrived in the Rufford passing loop heading for Ormskirk on one of the twelve return trips that make up its diagram for the day.

Drei Annen Hohne: Making a brisk departure from Drei Annen Hohne station in 2013.
Watford: Two trains of LUL S8 stock at Watford station, on 26th January 2013. Under long-standing plans to divert trains via a new link to the old Croxley Green branch, relay that to Watford High Street and run Metropolitan trains to Watford Junction, this station would be closed and the go-ahead for this was given but later cancelled before any work was done. Although this terminus is somewhat remote from Watford town centre, it serves a large residential catchment area so just as well it is staying open.
Brocken: Climbing through a snowy landscape near Brocken on 26 January 2013.
Headstone Lane: Station building at Headstone Lane, opened on 10th January 1913 on the New Lines of the LNWR, seen here just over 100 years later on 26th January 2013. This station was also served by LUL Bakerloo Line trains that became peak hours only north of Queens Park in 1965 and ceased altogether in 1982. A limited service of Bakerloo trains was reinstated to Stonebridge Park before a regular service was extended to Harrow & Wealdstone, not including Headstone Lane, in 1984.
Brock: As in 2012, the first WCML steam of 2013 was a Manchester Victoria to Carlisle train on 26 January, out via Shap and returning over the S&C. The train was again double headed by Ian Riley's Black 5s 44871 and 45407 and is seen here passing the site of Brock station on the outward leg.
Pleasure Beach [Tram]: Tram trap? As Flexity 016 travelled south towards Starr Gate I wondered if the speed enforcement officer in the yellow van was tempted to check tram speeds as well as the passing cars. A 10 minute interval timetable has been maintained by the new trams throughout the winter season and they seem to have generally settled down to give reliable performance, including during the previous week when there was also snow to contend with.
Brock: Early DBS/EWS Class 66 No. 66003, then in its 15th year of service, heads an infrastructure train north on the WCML at Brock on 26th January 2013. The early sun was already thawing the overnight snow as this train followed the preceding steam special.
Prologis Park: The mud, grass, and snow on the rails tell a sad story of non-use in this view looking ESE towards Coventry City's Ricoh Stadium, just visible on the skyline see image [[35643]]. The Stadium station is now due to be built in 2014. A second pair of rails is set in the tarmac to the left of this crossing, at the evocative-sounding junction of Winding House Lane and Wheelwrights Lane.

Botanique: Busy lunchtime at Botanique, an interchange between tram and underground systems in Brussels. The smart looking 3001, in silver and gold livery, was the first tram into the station for quite a while as there had been a police incident blocking the tracks. Several more trams were queuing behind it and the car on the line belonged to a Metro supervisor who had arrived to sort things out. 26th January 2017

Edinburgh Gateway [Tram]: An airport bound tram arrives at Edinburgh Gateway on 26 January 2017.
Edinburgh Park Central [Tram]: A cold and misty January morning on Edinburgh's west side, where a hard overnight frost has left the grassy shoulders of the tramway with a strangely satisfying 'crunch' underfoot. The tram pictured has just left Edinburgh Park Central and is running alongside some of the numerous office blocks that line this section of the route on its way to Gyle Centre.
Edinburgh Gateway [Tram]: Officially opened in December 2016, Edinburgh Gateway train/tram interchange was quickly dubbed a 'multi-million pound white elephant' by the media. The south face of the interchange building is seen here bathed in January sunshine one month after opening, with a tram leaving for York Place amid landscaping works still in progress. Note the passengers through the glass on the left descending the escalator from the main station to reach the tram platforms. The lines passing below the railway/tramway link bridge continue as far as Gogar tram depot.

Millom: Millom signalbox on a sunny January day in 2018.
Barkston South Junction: DB 67030 heads north light engine along the ECML on 26th January 2018. The locomotive has just passed the former Barkston South Junction, where the chord to the Skegness line branched off until 2005. It is just about to cross the Skegness to Nottingham line on the bridge shown. Trains from Skegness to Grantham now also run this way using the new Allington Chord. [Ref query 31 January 2018]
Sellafield: Sellafield SB just to the north of the station seen from a departing train on 26 January 2018. Whitehaven: 37402 waits patiently with the late running Barrow to Carlisle service at Whitehaven on 28 January 2018. The cause of the late running was nothing to do with the train on this occasion but a problem with the points on the single line section between Parton and Harrington. The local signalbox (Bransty) can be seen in the distance behind the lamp post.
St Bees: St Bees SB seen from a service departing northwards on 26 January 2018.

Bunsall Incline: The Bunsal Inclines were two of five inclines that took the Cromford and High Peak Railway from Whaley Bridge up to the plateau. Bunsall Lower at around 455 yards and with a gradient of 1 in 7 was combined in 1852 with Bunsall Upper (660 yards at 1 in 18). In this view in a south easterly direction, the upper incline goes from the point marked A (centre of photo) to B, upper right. This part of the railway was abandoned in the 1890s when the L&NWR made a connection to the upper section at Harpur Hill. This provided a connection to the Manchester area without the need of to use the northern inclines.
Loughborough Central: Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 0-6-0T Works No. 7684/1951 seen undergoing a contracted overhaul at Loughborough Central in January 2019. In October 1951 the locomotive was moved to Nechells Power Station in Warwickshire and became 'Nechells No 4'. It spent the rest of its working life there until it was withdrawn from service in June 1972 when steam operations ceased. In October 2018 the locomotive moved from the Chasewater Railway to the GCR following the locomotive being sold. The locomotive will be based on the Great Central Railway where it is expected to be fully overhauled.
