As of Feb 2021 56090 is now an operational Colas owned loco. The Procor wagon building site seen upper left is no longer a rail industry facility after being vacated by last occupier Bombardier, and the section of the M1 running across the upper part of the view is a four lane running Smart Motorway.

Layton: A Layton curiosity. What looks like an old shop front has apparently been put in place to close off the gap between the station buildings and make the rear of the former station house private. It certainly does not appear in pictures from steam days or even the early 1990s when the station was still staffed.

Burn Naze: View south from the end of the rails on the former Fleetwood line towards Burn Naze, where the industrial complex that kept the southern section of the line open for freight until the 1990s can be seen. Right up to the 1960s this then double track line saw express fish trains to London as well as a variety of other traffic. Passenger services ceased in 1970. Map Ref SD 329455

Rossall School: It is unusual to see rusty tracks on the tramway to Fleetwood but this section was closed during winter 2008/09 for refurbishment, including track renewal. Layton: Before Northern Rail finalised its livery it experimented with a number of trial schemes, including this predominantly white livery still carried by 156425 in 2009. Cardonald: Most trains at Cardonald are whoosing through on their way to and from Ayrshire destinations running non-stop between Glasgow and Paisley, managing briefly to drown out the roar of the M8 which runs parallel to the lines.  Every hour however two of the three services to Gourock call at the (almost) inseparable trio of Cardonald, Hillington East and Hillington West.  On 17 February 314 209 pulls in heading west.

Dumbarton East: No, not a replacement diesel service pulling into Dumbarton East, but the morning Up West Highland service on its way through after the stop at Dumbarton Central.  At Crianlarich the 156 unit which left Oban at 0811 was joined at the rear by the 0603 from Mallaig.

Uddingston: 156 511 calls at Uddingston with a service from Edinburgh to Glasgow via Shotts on 17 February.  It will run non-stop to Glasgow Central mainline station, as opposed to the more frequent but stopping electric services which use the Argyle Line, thus Glasgow Central Low Level.  At Uddingston Junction in the background the WCML curves right, while the line through Bellshill, though of necessity feathered left on the signal, goes straight on.

Hillington East: Hillington East opened in 1934 (as plain Hillington) to serve the pioneering industrial estate and the housing which was filling the gap (never quite filled) between Glasgow City and Paisley, and was later joined by Hillington West.  This ticket office at Hillie East seems to be original.  As with several other  SPT stations, but nowhere else in Scotland, the ticket window opens straight onto the platform as there is no waiting room as such.  Photographed on 17 February 2010.

Leith Walk East Goods: The site of the goods depot is filling up with housing. There was a very eighties (and very red) Royal Mail depot here in between. The former car park here has just been ripped up to reveal some rails which must have been cut up then left, later to be buried under tarmac (shades of Richard III). They are now piled up behind the digger. Looking east on 17/02/2017.

On the left is 86259 stabled on the parcel siding (south). The loco had hauled a CME from Euston to Carnforth and having handed over to steam for the run to Carlisle, returned south to Preston to await the charter arriving via the S&C.

The two platforms can be seen through the trees however the miniature railway line running in a loop around the two platforms appears to be 'out of use' with vegetation growing between the rails. Hopefully this isn't the second line to be closed at this location.

Woodacre Crossing: A special MOD working from Longtown to Southampton Docks, on 17th February 2022, was entrusted to Royal Scotsman liveried 66746. Preston: Storm Dudley disruption. With delays and cancellations on the northern part of the WCML, on 17 February 2022, there were quite a few trains stranded at Preston resulting in Avanti services having to make use of platforms 1 & 2. The congestion was made even worse with platforms 5 & 6 and the U&D goods loop all blocked due to suspected damage to the roof, platform 4 with a TPE service from the north terminated and platform 3 with an Avanti Pendolino waiting with a northbound service. Even with the cancellations trains on all lines were backed up waiting to get in to Preston. In this view an Avanti Voyager to Blackpool on platform 1 makes an extended call, a Northern Class 150 departs with a service to Colne while the 1S45 Avanti Pendolino to Glasgow is going nowhere on platform 3.

Very occasionally, this siding is used for stabling locos - see image [[37231]].
