Clarkston and Stamperland: J35 0-6-0 no 64471 carrying out shunting work in the yard at Clarkston in March 1955.
Clarkston and Stamperland: Shunting taking place in the small yard at Clarkston in the spring of 1955. The locomotive is one of the small batch of J35 0-6-0s allocated to Polmadie shed during the mid to late 1950s, in this case 64471. The sidings here were lifted in the early part of 1964 see image [[51859]]. [Ref query 16 November 2018]
Aberdeen: Ex NBR Class D34 4-4-0 62482 'Glen Mamie' at Aberdeen Station, on north-end pilot duty, in March 1960.
Aberdeen: A Swindon 3-car DMU at Aberdeen (north end), alongside an NBR 'Glen' 4-4-0 with parcels stock, in 1960.
Kipps Shed: The hard winter of 1963 is not yet over, as witnessed by the icicles firmly attached to J88 No 68345, as it shares a siding with Y9 0-4-0 ST No 68104 at Kipps shed on 2 March 1963.
Hawick Shed: Ivatt 4F 2-6-0 no 43141 in the shed yard at Hawick in March 1963.
Kipps Shed: Caley 0-4-0ST 56029, and NB J83 0-6-0T 68442, are probably frozen solid as they huddle together at Kipps shed on 2 March 1963. Snow is still on the ground, as it had been since the start of the year. No hint of global warming here!
Dawsholm Shed: Ex-NBR J88 0-6-0T No 68336 has found a quiet corner at Dawsholm Shed on 2 March 1963. It is still sporting the 'Cycling Lion' emblem on the tank sides.
East Loch Tarbert Pier: View of Tarbert in March 1963, with the hillside on fire after what one imagines must have been a long dry spell towards the end of the severe winter of 1962/63. In the foreground the Clyde puffer 'Boer' is moored at the pier.
Elderslie: An Ayr-bound Swindon DMU, (later Class 126) has just passed the Elderslie No.2 signal box and is about to cross over the 'fly-under' line to Cart Junction on 2 March 1965.

Glasgow Queen Street High Level: View back along the platform towards the concourse at Glasgow Queen Street in March 1985.
Woodacre Crossing: Express Sprinter 158761, probably brand new and on test, runs south on the WCML approaching Woodacre Crossing on 2nd March 1991. These units never saw regular use on this stretch of line, apart from the early years of the Virgin franchise when five sets were used on services between Scotland and Manchester, but in 2018 are being introduced on Barrow to Manchester Airport services. I recall thinking the 158s were a very stylish design when new and they haven't really aged down the years.
Woodacre Crossing: 90050 heads south at Woodacre with ICI tank wagons on 2nd March 1991. This was the last of the class, built at Crewe Works, and at this time was less than one year old but it was destined for a short operational life as it suffered fire damage in 2004 and has been stored ever since. It is presently in Basford Hall Yard providing spares for operational 90s in the Freightliner fleet.
Wakefield MPD: The north end of the former 10 road straight through shed at 56A Wakefield, photographed on 2 March 1991. The shed, which had an allocation of over 120 steam locomotives in the 1950s, officially closed in June 1967, although part of the building was subsequently put to use as a wagon repair facility, an activity that continued until 1986. The structure was finally demolished in 1993.
Bo'ness: Preserved 0-6-0ST No 3 Lady Victoria at Boness in March 1998 during a downpour (thus the photograph from the car window). The locomotive was built by Andrew Barclay, Kilmarnock, (works no 1458) in 1916 for the Ministry of Munitions, National Filling Factory No 4, Georgetown (later part of ROF Bishopton). Sold to the Lothian Coal Co after WW1, it ended its working life at Lady Victoria Colliery, Newtongrange, part of NCB Area 2 (Lothians). It was acquired by the SRPS in 1978.
Winscombe: Bridge over the A371, just south of Winscombe Station, North Somerset, where the Cheddar Valley line crossed the A371. The trackbed is now surfaced as the Strawberry Line path.
Eskbank and Dalkeith: The old Eskbank station on the Waverley route looking south in March 2005. The proposed new station will be half a mile further south behind the Tesco Superstore car park near the A7 roundabout.

Montrose: Asda Intermodal passing through Montrose at speed heading for Aberdeen behind a DRS Class 66.
Lunan Bay: Looking north from the overbridge near Lunan Bay. Station House is in the trees to the left.
Usan Signal Box: New signalling equipment to the left as an Aberdeen 170 passes Usan cabin and enters the single line section to Montrose in March 2008. The Cabin will be superceded under the local resignalling scheme. The level crossing leads nowhere, it is a means for NR to place road/rail vehicles on/off the tracks. See image [[41879]]
Brechin: Very attractive main entrance at Brechin station in March 2008, well maintained by volunteers. Brechin trains will run at the Easter weekend. Permission has been granted for the Caledonian Railway (Brechin) to lengthen their main platform, at the moment four carriages is the maximum.
Montrose: Montrose North Cabin. Opposite is a strange new semaphore signal (partly covered) which protects a new crossover. Word is that the up line through Montrose station is to be bi-directional. When the new signalling system eventually come to fruition this cabin (closed at the moment) will control the local area.
Brechin: Goods platform at Brechin. Gate locked but the tank has seen me.
Shandon: Ongoing work on the West Highland Line at Shandon on 2 March with the rails removed over the blocked culvert and the water pumped away prior to its replacement. Some culverts hereabouts are particularly lengthy as they also run under the embankment of the adjacent military line.
Shandon: This seemingly small landside has closed the West Highland Line at Shandon. View from old military line to Faslane Port on 2 March where tree cutting is taking place to allow plant access to the slip.
Rossie Viaduct: Red Brick single track Ferryden Viaduct approaching Montrose from the south.
Oubeck Loops: DRS 66418, on a W H Malcolm container train, is held in the Up Loop at Oubeck to allow passenger trains to overtake. In the foreground is the Ou Beck from which the loops get their name. A very rural setting, only two miles south of Lancaster City Centre, alongside the A6 main road. Map Ref SD 481568
Gairney Viaduct: Fine looking viaduct over the Pow Burn a mile or so west of Rumbling Bridge in March 2009.
Rugeley Town: Rugeley Town station and Brereton Sidings signal box, looking north east towards Rugeley Trent Valley and the WCML, with the coal stack of Rugeley power station prominent above the signal box.
Gnosall: Newly completed ramped access onto the east side trackbed footpath, running to Stafford, along the former Telford - Newport - Stafford line at Gnosall (closed 1964). A Pelican crossing has been installed across the A518 which intersects the trackbed - now used as 'The Way for the Millennium' long distance footpath.
Rugeley: Great expectations amongst the sheep flock, following the arrival of a farm worker, just as a 4 car Virgin Voyager heads north along the WCML from Rugeley.
Gathurst: 156421 heads west from Gathurst on 2 March 2010 with a service to Southport, contrary to what the destination board at the back of the unit suggests. The service is about to cross the Leeds - Liverpool Canal and then pass below the Gathurst viaduct carrying the M6 motorway.
Blackrod: A Manchester to Blackpool North calls at Blackrod on 2nd March 2010. Since this photo was taken electrification has changed the scene but 150148 is still operating on services for Northern.
Gathurst: Looking east towards Wigan as 156426 approaches Gathurst with a service to Southport on 2nd March 2010. The large building on the right is part of the Heinz canning plant which includes baked beans.
Gathurst: Looking west over Gathurst station on 2 March 2010. On the right was the former goods yard and exchange sidings between the narrow gauge system linking the ICI explosives factory on the other 8side of the valley and the BR network. Amazingly the remnants of a set of points in the former yard are still visible bottom right. See image [[21338]] for a comparison with the situation thirty two years earlier
Blackrod: View north at Blackrod, between Chorley and Bolton, where there was a triangular junction with the line to Horwich station and the Horwich works of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway. Class 150 unit number 272 calls at the station on 2 March with a service for Hazel Grove. The signal box (still in use) can just be made out through the footbridge and stands next to the northern part of the old triangle. The southern junction to Horwich may have been to the right of the goods shed. The rapid expansion of railways in this part of the world in the mid to late 19th century is well reflected in the names carried by this station between 1841 and 1888 which were Horwich Road, Horwich and Blackrod, Horwich Junction, Horwich and Blackrod Junction and finally Blackrod.
Horwich Works: A panoramic shot looking east over the town of Horwich on a chilly 2 March 2010, with the appropriately named Winter Hill in the background. The former railway works stretches across the centre of the frame as the top of a First TransPennine train is seen running past in the foreground on the line from Bolton to Chorley and Preston. Opened by the L&Y in 1886 the works employed over 5,000 people at it's peak. Horwich produced its last new locomotive in 1957 and completed its last overhaul in 1964. The works continued to be used for general rolling stock into the 1980s but was eventually sold by BREL in 1988. The former works is now part of a large industrial estate named 'Horwich Loco' with most of the buildings still being put to good use.
Rugeley: Freightliner 66624 heads north, with empty high capacity open bogie wagons, shortly after passing Rugeley on 2 March 2010. Less than four months later it was exported to work for Freightliner in Poland.
Gathurst: A Manchester to Southport Class 150 has just crossed over the Leeds - Liverpool Canal and is now passing under the Gathurst Viaduct of the M6 Motorway, late in the afternoon of 2nd March 2010. See image [[25845]] of the same bridges just over thirty years earlier.
Blackrod: A TPE service to Manchester Airport has just passed through Blackrod on 02 March 2010 as it heads to its next stop at Horwich Parkway. Although TPE are not running via Bolton at the moment, electrification has now been completed and perhaps we will see TPE services between Edinburgh/Glasgow and Manchester from May 2019.
Blackrod: 185122 passes Blackrod at speed with a Manchester Airport to Edinburgh service on 02 March 2010. Quite a few changes have taken place here in the intervening years with the electrification of the Preston to Manchester line. Class 185s have been replaced by Class 350s on these services and those are themselves expected to be replaced by the new Class 397s once they are accepted from the manufacturer.
Red Rock: The former Red Rock station, on the line that ran north east from Boar's Head on the WCML to Adlington Junction. The old building, seen here on 2 March 2010, has been modified and extended since closure in 1949 and is now an attractive looking residence. The sign on the gate post reads The Old Station.
Chester: Merseyrail EMU 507010 stands at Platform 7b of Chester Station on 2 March awaiting its 15.46 departure time to return to Liverpool Central via Hooton.
Crewe: 'Thunderbird' 57302 Virgil Tracy awaits a resue call in the short siding opposite Platform 11 at Crewe Station on 2 March 2011.
Chester: Roofless, fire damaged, and facing possible demolition. The Chester Enterprise Centre which utilised the large former railway goods shed located alongside Chester Station, seen here on 2 March 2011. The building was gutted by fire in the early hours of 2 December 2010
Crewe Heritage Centre: Grab shot taken from a Chester Line DMU on 2 March 2011 showing black liveried 70000 Britannia undergoing steam testing at Crewe Heritage Centre, minus smoke deflectors see image [[33219]].
Gilmerton: Scene on the Edinburgh, Loanhead and Roslin route approximately 2 miles south west of Millerhill Yard on 2 March 2011. The trackbed here is now clear with recently lifted rails lying alongside. Behind the camera two teams are currently engaged in the recovery of concrete sleepers. View is east from a farm overbridge looking towards the site of the former Gilmerton station. See image [[36048]]
Nuneaton North Junction: The joys of reversible signalling: 66065 (left, with containers) and 66009 (right, just leaving with dirty Murco oil tanks) demonstrate the use of the WCML-Birmingham chord as a double storage loop on 2 March 2012. Speaking of chords, the scaffolding to the left of 65 is the start of works for the North Chord bridge over this line. The OHL is just for head shunting - so far. See image [[36148 for earlier image]]
Leuchars: The 14.00 from Waverley bang on time at Leuchars on a dreich March afternoon, formed by Turbostar 170 450.

Banbury: A southbound Class 172 two coach Turbostar approaches Banbury on 2nd March 2013 with a Chiltern Railways service. On the left is the Lafarge Aggregates coating plant.
Erith: Exterior of Erith, south-east London, one of the original North Kent Railway stations opened with the line on 30th July 1849, seen on 2nd March 2013. The main building is no longer in railway use, intending passengers purchasing tickets from a machine and entering through a gap on the left.
Welling: 465166 to Barnehurst arriving at Welling on 2nd March 2013. This station on the Bexleyheath Loop was opened on 1st May 1895 by the independent Bexley Heath (sic) Railway that runs from the North Kent Line at Blackheath back to the North Kent by means of a triangular junction between Slade Green and Dartford. Welling is still theoretically in Kent but now that part of it within Greater south-east London.
Falconwood: Falconwood station, on the Bexleyheath Loop, looking towards central London, on 2nd March 2013. This line was a latecomer to the railway geography of south-east London, not opening until 1st May 1895 but Falconwood station was even later, opening on 1st January 1936 to serve new residential development in the area.
Gannow Junction: Gannow Junction is where the Colne branch diverges from the Copy Pit line. Immediately below the junction is the western portal of Gannow Tunnel (559 yards long) on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The tunnel doesn't take the canal under the railway, although it does cross the line near the eastern end at Burnley Barracks station. In this view a Sprinter heading for Colne can just be seen top right.
Royal Border Bridge: A down CrossCountry service on the Royal Border Bridge, Berwick upon Tweed, 2 Mar 2013.
Brunstane: Pansies bring a hint of spring to the platform at Brunstane on 2 March 2015.
Preston (Ribble Branch): Colas 'Super 60' 60076 approaches Fishergate Tunnel having just crossed Strand Road with the returning bitumen empties for Lindsey Refinery on 2 March 2015. Colas was recently awarded the contract for these trains, taking over the haulage from DBS.
Hest Bank: 47746 Chris Fudge 29.7.70 - 22.6.10, fresh from its naming that day, brings a Brush Type 4 Fund private charter back towards Carnforth following a day trip to Stratford-on-Avon via Tamworth. 47746 was previously owned by the BT4F but is now part of the West Coast Railways fleet.

Leicester: An East Midlands Trains HST approaches Leicester from the north on 02 March 2016. On the right is the Leicester Signalling Centre.
Blackburn: A dusting of spring snow at Blackburn, on 2nd March 2016, as a Pacer slows to call with a train from Colne. 142040 lasted in service with Northern until 2019 and then went under its own power to Newport in South Wales where it was scrapped in January 2020.
Edinburgh Waverley: Platform 12 is now out of use at Waverley for lengthening.
Länsiterminaali [Tram]: At the terminus of the newly extended line to Lansisatama / Vastrahamnen (West Harbour) is a new Transtech Oy tram built in Otanmaki, Finland. The area is still 'a work in progress'.
Carleton Crossing: All wiring complete now at Carleton Crossing. This view looks towards Blackpool on 2nd March 2018 and this particular location now seems ready for the return of trains in just over three weeks time.
Poulton-le-Fylde: The L&YR canopy has been retained at Poulton during the electrification refurbishment but new valances have had to be installed to provide the necessary clearances. Work was continuing on 2nd March 2018 with three weeks to go before reopening. See image [[19049]] showing the original valance which completely hid the platform clock from this viewpoint.
Dunblane: Disruptive snow conditions in Dunblane station on 2nd March 2018. DRS 37602 is engaged on a Network Rail special working.
Layton: Masts, colour lights and some wiring in place at Layton on 2nd March 2018, just over three weeks before passenger services to Blackpool North resume. New waiting shelters have also been installed at this unstaffed station.
Layton: Notice on the platform at (temporarily) closed Layton station on 2nd March 2018 with three weeks to go before reopening following the five month electrification closure.
Blackpool North: Gantries are now being erected around the new platforms and approach to Blackpool North station. There was no snow to interfere with work on 2nd March 2018 but there was a bitingly cold wind for the Orange Army to contend with.
Dunblane Junction: The 'Winter Train' held north of Dunblane station alongside the signal box.
Cardross: 'Loch Laidon' returning east from Helensburgh on snow clearing duties.
Dunblane Junction: DRS 37602 encounters a small snowdrift alongside Dunblane signal box on the afternoon of Friday 2nd March 2018. The loco was top and tailed with a Class 66 on a Network Rail special. This is Network Rail's 'Snow Train / Winter Train'. the bridge is the Bridgend footbridge beside the signal box - the most northerly structure to be altered for electrification.
Sheffield: Sign seen at Sheffield station ahead of the latest RMT strike day on 3rd march 2018.
Blackpool North: A particularly long gantry has been erected over six tracks at Blackpool North, seen here on 2nd March 2018 with work still proceeding on the new platforms. Note the new signals on island Platform 5/6. The station reopens to DIESEL trains on 26th March but electric services will only begin with the May 2018 timetable.
Cranmore: March 2019 and 46447 an Ivatt LMSR 2-6-0 tender engine, built Crewe 1950. The view shows the new platform being built to replace the one demolished by BR in the 50's.
Cranmore: Photographs taken on the 5637 Shareholders' Day at the East Somerset Railway. The newly erected Museum and Information Building. Heritage Lottery Funded.
Cranmore: 5637, a GWR 0-6-2T, built at Swindon in 1925 and seen at Cranmore in 2019. Shares are still available at a bargain price.
Preston: MN 35018 British India Line arrives at a very wet Preston on 02 March 2019, having travelled over a very wet and windy S&C with the return Winter CME. 35018 came off the train here and returned north to Carnforth while 86259 was attached at the south end of the station for the run back to London.
Preston: E3137 (aka 86259) couples up to the south end of the Winter CME railtour at Preston on 02 March 2019 to take it back to London. The tour had arrived from Carlisle via the S&C with MN 35018 'British India Line' which was at the north end of the station. Unfortunately there are a few items on the platform which detract from what otherwise could have been from the southern part of the WCML in the late 60s.
York: Freightliner 66565 nears York Station with a Redcar to Scunthorpe coal train on 2nd March 2020.
Shawfair: … to what? It seems to be inviting you to live elsewhere. Anyway, an endearingly idealistic view of a future Shawfair with a cafe society, an outsize little girl, single-ended MU and a quite unnecessary railway viaduct.
Balcombe: As we flew back from Barcelona to Stansted on 2nd March, I noticed that we were flying parallel to the Brighton to London line. Study of Google Maps suggests that this viaduct, with a lengthy up train crossing, is Balcombe viaduct. I stand prepared to be shot down by anyone who knows the Southern better than me. Not literally, of course: I have now left the aircraft ...
Stansted Airport: Fortunately, 170.521 has curves. It is forming the 17.27 to Birmingham New Street on 2nd March 2020. I had just returned from Barcelona, and was happy to be going home.
Stansted Airport: An early FLIRT unit about to head for Norwich from the Stygian depths of Stansted Airport station in March 2020 (compare to image [[73157]])
Stansted Airport: Stansted Airport pedestrian entrance - does exactly what it says on the concrete box.
Dalgety Bay: Amid the news that Scotrail HSTs are to increase from four to five coaches there have been movements of HST coaches around the network. 43164 and 43143 sandwich a single coach approaching Dalgety Bay with a Haymarket - Inverness transfer on 2 March 2021.
Farington Junction: 195130 passes Farington Junction on 2 March 2021 with the 1512 hrs service from Windermere to Manchester Airport.
Inverkeithing East Junction: I am getting used to short-formed Scotrail HSTs, but not one as short as this! 43164 and 43143 sandwich a single coach climbing away from Inverkeithing East Junction with a Haymarket - Inverness transfer on 2 March 2021.
Inverkeithing East Junction: The Network Rail New Measurement Train climbs away from Inverkeithing East Junction, with an Edinburgh - Aberdeen - Slateford working, on 2nd March 2021.
Cambus o' May: The edge of this map sheet shows a building coloured pink with the number 509 superimposed beside a manmade water course. This was probably the mill associated with the Ferry Inn at Cambus o May (see [[71624]]). The minutes of Board Meetings reveal that at the time when the railway was being built the contractor, K. Mathieson, seems to have bought it from the Huntly Estate; at any rate he was reimbursed to the tune of £400(!) by the A&BR Co. It is not clear when but it was evidently converted to a house and later used to accommodate the navvies working nearby. The OS Book of Reference shows that 509 was a 'House and yard' whilst 510 was a 'Garden'. When the line opened the railway company took it over and used it to house one of its Waymen (Platelayer) who paid one Guinea (21/-) per year in rent. This man not only inspected and maintained his section of track; he was also responsible for working the points at the nearby ballast pit siding. Taken from Map sheet Aberdeenshire XCII.2 https://maps.nls.uk/view/74480059 Posted by Charlie Niven and used with permission of the National Library of Scotland see maps.nls.uk/copyright.html
Carnforth: 390001 'Bee Together' (formerly 'Virgin Pioneer') hurries past the loops at Carnforth with a Glasgow to Euston service on 2nd March 2022. In July 2022 it will be 20 years since the introduction of Pendolinos, which were first used on special services for the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Since then each unit has covered several million miles and they will no doubt be carrying spectators to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on that anniversary.
Carnforth: 88007 'Electra' approaches Carnforth from the south, with containers heading for Mossend, on a dull and damp 2nd March 2022.
Powderhall: Redevelopment continues at Powderhall, as shown in this view north from Broughton Road on 24 February 2022. The original 1893 building (The Destructor) off to the left is being refurbished and modified for future use as 'community and work space' while the remainder of the site is earmarked for housing. The former loading apron built on the site of the old platform runs alongside the overgrown trackbed, with barriers now blocking access to the bridge over the Water of Leith in the right background. For a 2006 view see image [[11948]].
Gatebeck Powder Works [South]: Both the south and north sites at Gatebeck Powder Works are now occupied by caravan parks and most powder works buildings have gone but the south site still has this remnant from working days. This site had a maze of tramway lines and sidings, one of which ran directly in front of this building that, despite appearances, is still used as a park workshop. Photo taken on private land with kind permission of site owner.
Carnforth: The daily Hardendale to Tunstead stone empties hurry south through Carnforth behind 66613 on 2nd March 2022. Over on the left, beyond the operational loops, the rake of derelict West Coast Railways coaching stock continues to moulder alongside the WCML, as it has done for many years now.
Challon Hall Siding: Looking along the line of the Gatebeck Tramway at the site of Challon Hall Siding in 2022. Until 1937 the horse drawn tramway crossed the beck dead ahead and continued to follow it to the south site of the Gatebeck Gunpowder Works a short distance away.
Carnforth: Most of the parts donor locos at Carnforth that I saw on my last visit in 2015 [[49960]] are no longer visible round the yard, but I have no confirmation that they have been scrapped yet. The sidings the locos previously occupied now contain WCRC coaching stock and 08678 (running as 555) was shunting on 2nd March 2022. Also visible here is GWR 2-8-0 3802, which was operational in Autumn 2021 and is reported to be at Carnforth for tyre turning prior to operating at Llangollen in 2022.
Gatebeck Powder Works [South]: I was immediately struck by the similarity between this old office building (now a private house) at Gatebeck Powder Works and its counterpart at Kames Gunpowder Works near Tighnabruaich [[64418]]. The main line of the Gatebeck Tramway crossed the river just behind this South Works site building and continued to the North Works site. The works closed in 1937.
Challon Hall Siding: Looking south from the site of Challon Hall Siding, along the route of the Gatebeck Tramway which followed the line of this hedge as it proceeded towards Crooklands. The 3.5 mile tramway linked the Gatebeck Powder Works with the Lancaster Canal at Crooklands and the railway at Milnthorpe. It closed with the works in 1937 and few physical traces remain.
Troon: The 11.08 Ayr to Glasgow Central calls at Troon on 2nd March 2022. No sign of the promised rebuilding at this time.
