Plates, signs, notices etc: Extract from a 1915 LNWR timetable showing services on the then independent Knott End Railway (formerly the Garstang and Knot (sic) End Railway), which connected with LNWR services at Garstang and Catterall station. Branch services operated on a one engine in steam basis. Nateby was a request stop for all services and the halts at Cockerham Cross and Cogie Hill are referred to as 'on request on Thursdays' (Garstang Market) and 'Saturdays only'. Later on the KER hired in an LNWR railmotor with extra services and then the LMS opened some new halts at Garstang Road and Carr Lane but passenger services ceased altogether in 1930.

Plates, signs, notices etc: An extract from the LNWR timetable for 1916 showing services on the Longridge branch during WWI. The line closed to passengers in 1930 but since that time Longridge has continued to expand and the road to Preston is very congested. 100 years later, what wouldn't the town's residents give for a 22 minute journey time into the centre of Preston?

Plates, signs, notices etc: Poignant disclaimer notice in the Spring 1915 London and North Western Railway timetable. The war that in 1914 would be over by Christmas was continuing and the Battles of the Somme and Ypres were yet to come, although General Manager Calthrop wasn't to know that. With thanks to Tony Roberts for the loan of this fascinating timetable.

Plates, signs, notices etc: Only four trains a day on the Glasson Dock branch in this 1915 LNWR timetable extract. The intermediate station of Conder Green had an unusual service to say the least. All down trains would stop on request to set down but Up trains would only pick up on Saturdays. The final passenger trains ran in 1930 but a goods service continued until 1964. Almost the entire branch is now a public cycleway and footpath and well used See image [[19582]]

Loanhead: By 1966 the Glencorse branch had been closed beyond Bilston Glen Colliery on the south side of Loanhead. Coal traffic generated by the pit, latterly supplying Cockenzie PS, kept the last section of the route back to Millerhill open for a further 25 years. Less than half a mile north of Bilston Glen the line passed below a road bridge near Loanhead town centre, seen here in March 2011, almost 20 years after the last coal train had gone.

Hurlford Signal Box: By March 2013 all the track at Hurlford inside the boundary fence (quite literally) had been lifted although the shunt signal, and the main line ground signals at the crossover just north of the 'box, were still in position, and operational, I assume. Also, by that date, the main line connection had been partially dismantled in what has become normal Network Rail practice these days as far as I can tell, ie the frog removed and replaced with plain rail. In this case, the frog was simply dumped right there.

Clackmannan and Kennet: In 2014, the Stirling to Longannet line was re-laid after only 6 years of use. The original metal sleepers were replaced by concrete versions and the track bed brought up to a higher standard in view of the continuing wear and tear from the heavy coal trains to Longannet power station. At the time, the investment was predicated on the power station remaining in operation until at least 2025, but shortly after the upgrade had been completed, closure was brought forward to March 2016. It opened as a pedestrian subway in 1843 and, despite shops and the occasional fair being held, it was little used and was later taken over by the East London Railway Company with the first trains running through from the south as far as Wapping in 1869.

Kirbymoorside: Heading west from Kirbymoorside to Helmsley there still remains a lengthy section of intact trackbed running on sections of embankment from Starfitt Lane level crossing before running across the impressive Kirkdale Viaduct. See image [[58392]]. After the viaduct a short section of the solum of the line running west has been covered and grassed over upto overbridge HMY14 on Kirkdale Lane, seen here in a view looking west. Beyond the bridge the route of line has been obliterated either side of the A170 road, through to just east of Nawton Station, as a result of land being ploughed out to allow planting of arable crops. See image [[75962]].

Kirbymoorside: Looking north east to the extended crossing keepers cottage sited on the east side of the former Starfitt Lane level crossing, with the line running across from the piece of dark ground at centre left of view. The line ran along two short lengths of embankment between Kirkdale Viaduct, some 250 metres to the west, and the level crossing, and then entered a shallow cutting, now infilled where is forms the cottage garden, en route east to Kirbymoorside.

Poulton-le-Fylde: Weekend pre-electrification work is continuing on the Blackpool line in 2017. At Poulton-le-Fylde the last remains of the extended island platform have been removed as has a semaphore signal and the long disused loop where coal trains for Fleetwood could wait until the branch had cleared. 156468 leads a four coach Manchester Airport to Blackpool North service approaching Poulton on 1st March 2017. Passing time ~ 1150, 30 mins. late due to a freight train failing. This was the first steamer of the year through Swindon, although if you listened to the local media, you would think it was the first steam train since 1965.

Kirkdale Viaduct: A short distance to the west of Kirbymoorside the line from Pickering to Helmsley and Gilling East ran across an impressive 3 arch viaduct over farmland and the Hodge Beck, and, as this 2017 view looking south towards the A170 trunk road shows, the tall viaduct still stands proud at the end of a long section of extant embankment running from the former level crossing on Starfitt Lane to left of view.

Edinburgh Waverley: With no trains running because of heavy snow Waverley is oh so quiet as well as being unnaturally dark because of the amount of snow on the glass roof. In this shot staff outnumber passengers 2 to 1. One wonders what the passengers are doing there at all, considering the board shows that all train are cancelled and the digital announcer is wearily intoning the same thing without pause.

Midland Junction [Nuneaton]: This disused bridge on the former Nuneaton station avoiding line (the Birmingham to Leicester line while Abbey Street station was still open) has survived being hit by a 40-tonne truck, but the truck (just visible behind the bright red recovery wagon) tipped over onto its right side, and was certainly more damaged than the bridge. Why is it so difficult for truck drivers to read height restriction signs? Old Hinckley Road was closed for six hours - the consequences could have been horrific if the truck, sliding out of control on the wrong side of the road, had hit an oncoming car. POSTSCRIPT: this was one bash too many for Nuneaton Council - the bridge was demolished on 15th-16th February 2020.

Seacombe Ferry Terminal: Seacombe Ferry Terminal, seen from the ferry 'Royal Iris' on 1st March 2020. Birkenhead Shore Road Goods: Shore Road Goods Station in Birkenhead, was opened by the CLC around 1888 and closed in 1961, but it lives on and is now owned by Wirral Borough Council, who partly use it as their Archives Store. Seen here on 1st March 2020 it has been very tastefully restored and is now known as the Cheshire Lines Building.

Redford Barracks Branch Canal Bridge: After the Redford Barracks construction branch crossed the Union Canal (out of sight, left distance) it turned sharply southwest. The line would have been lifted 20 years before suburban housing first appeared here, but surprisingly perhaps the old cutting at this point was left as a gap in the houses. It remains discernable to this day.
