Brocklesby: 66004 has just passed through the closed station of Brocklesby wrong line with a train from Immingham and is now crossing to the west bound line to travel towards the junction at Barnetby. For some reason the front half of the train was empty but the rear was loaded with coal.

Barton-on-Humber: A view down the long straight stretch of line towards Barrow Haven from the short platform at Barton-on-Humber in May 2012. Northern 153324 is newly arrived from Cleethorpes and Grimsby and will shortly return there with the two-hourly shuttle service. There is lots of interesting infrastructure on this line (mechanical signalboxes etc) but not at Barton itself.

Brocklesby: 66004 brings a part loaded coal train from Immingham off the freight only chord from Ulceby and through the closed station of Brocklesby on 21 May 2012. At this point the train is heading west on the eastbound Grimsby line but will cross to the westbound line just under the road bridge from which the photograph was taken.

Cleethorpes: TPE 170302, newly arrived at Cleethorpes from Manchester Airport, has cleared the single line section from Grimsby, which will allow Northern 153324 to make another trip to Barton-on-Humber. This branch service is isolated from the rest of the Northern network and the bubble car was crewed by First TPE staff.

New Holland: Barrow Road Crossing signal box, as seen from a train departing from (new) New Holland station on the Barton-on-Humber branch. The start of the old line to the New Holland Pier can just be seen curving into the industrial complex that now covers the site of New Holland Town station. The new station opened in 1981 replacing the Town and Pier stations that closed when the Humber Bridge opened and the ferry service was withdrawn.

Barton-on-Humber: It looks as if the Barton on Humber branch once continued beyond the station, or was planned to, but as far as I'm aware it never did. View past the cab of the newly arrived bubble car to the buffer stops. A basic two-hourly shuttle operates from here to Grimsby and Cleethorpes. This journey takes just under fifty minutes, which allows the single unit to maintain services.

Woodhall Junction: The substantial station at Woodhall Junction (named Kirkstead from opening until 1922) was on the direct line from Lincoln to Firsby and only closed in 1970. It was also the junction for lines to Boston (closed 1963) and the Horncastle branch which closed to passengers in 1954 but still saw occasional freight trains as late as 1971. View towards Boston from the site of the old level crossing, now replaced by a new road that crosses the adjacent river at a much higher level behind the camera.

Ludborough: In a very rural Lincolnshire location, Ludborough closed to passengers in 1961 although passenger services from Louth continued to pass through until 1970 and goods trains a further ten years after that. The station has now become the base of the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway and trains run a short distance either side of the level crossing seen here in May 2012.

The whole area at the riverside of the Yarra where the pier and freight sidings were is security-fenced as it is a naval base where the RAN's carrier HMAS Canberra is at present fitting out. Rushey Platt: Remains of the 1883 station at Rushey Platt, Swindon, in May 2013. The 4-platform station stood at the south end of the spur linking the GWR with the MSWJ. Closed to passengers in 1905 the station continued to handle goods traffic (mainly milk) well into the 1960s, with the line closing completely in 1975. Much of the site is now covered by an industrial estate.

2013World^s most luxurious train station planned by Saudi Arabia^s King Abdullah [Herald Sun]WITH gold-plated walls and marbled walkways, this isn^t your average train station. Saudi Arabia^s King Abdullah is planning to build an extravagant new six-line train network, in a move that^s sure to make travellers around the world extremely envious. Its breathtaking, sweeping design was created by architect Zaha Hadid to mimic the country^s wind-blown sand dunes. It^s also designed to let in light while keeping out the harsh desert sun, in one of the hottest places in the world. The King has ordered the impressive station be built in the capital of Riyadh within just four years - the same time it took workers to renovate one station in New York. 2014French rail company order 2,000 trains too wide for platforms [Telegraph]It is a minor miscalculation, but one that will cost the French taxpayer a fortune. France’s national rail operator SNCF - which runs its prestigious TGV fast trains - has sparked hilarity, anger and ridicule after building a new generation of regional trains that are too wide for 1,300 stations, meaning platforms will have to be “shaved” to stop them getting stuck. The appalling blunder, which the French transport minister on Wednesday dubbed “comically tragic”, has already reportedly cost the state-controlled SNCF some €50 million (£40.5 million), sparking uproar at a time of austerity. Dave Peacey, from Swindon and Cricklade Railway, said they had just refurbished it for the coming season and it was ^very hurtful^. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said it was investigating the cause of the blaze. Mr Peacey said: ^Back in January and February a team of us refurbished the whole thing inside. ^We repainted it, cleaned all the upholstery and made it look really smart for this coming season. And now of course we^ve lost it and it^s very hurtful. ^It^s valued at around about £80,000, but with the three wagons that were adjacent to it that have also been destroyed, the value is in excess of probably £100,000 damage.^ The train - a Diesel Electrical Multiple Unit (DEMU) - was built in 1964 and is nicknamed the ^thumper^ because of the engine^s distinctive noise. It was one of only three in the country. [From Richard Buckby]

2020Is it end of the line for Pacer trains as Northern finally says none are in service? [News & Star]It could finally be the end of the line for Pacer trains, as train operator Northern says they are no longer working its routes. For 35 years, since they came into operation during the mid-80s, they have been a heavily-criticised part of the network. The continued use of the train - known for being slow, bouncy and noisy has been used as an example of the disparity in transport investment between the north and the south east.
