The Green: R&ER diesel Perkins lifts a train for Dalegarth up the last few yards of incline before the level crossing at The Green station. View towards Ravenglass in July 2013.
Milngavie: Volunteers at Milngavie station alongside the Milngavie in Bloom poster currently on display there. A small exhibition to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Milngavie station is to be held in the nearby Town Hall from 10th-14th September alongside displays showing the work of some of the Milngavie clubs and societies during that period. It will also be part of East Dunbartonshire Doors Open Day on 14th September.
The Green: R&ER diesel Perkins goes cautiously across the level crossing and in to Eskdale Green station with a train for Dalegarth. Although it appears under that name in some literature and on maps the name boards on the platform simply show The Green and the two names have both been used at various times over the railway's life.
Midland Hotel [Morecambe]: The restored art deco Midland Hotel, Morecambe, in July 2013, complete with Transport Trust plaque. See image [[26884]]
Kirkham and Wesham: 185112 heads west from Kirkham on 27 July 2013 on its way from Manchester Airport to Blackpool North. In the background 185117 on the reverse service has just crossed from the through line in order to call at Kirkham and Wesham station. Above the nearer 185 is a surviving abuttment of the flyover that once carried the line from Blackpool Central. Beyond that Kirkham signal box can just be seen.
Farington Junction: DRS 37607+37608 head south at Farington Junction with two 4 wheel flat wagons on 27 July 2013 on a Sellafield to Crewe working.
Seascale: Three items of interest in this view of Seascale's southbound platform. The old Furness Railway water tower is a prominent local landmark. To its right is the old goods shed, which is now the town's Sports Centre. On the platform itself is a Harrington Hump which provides level access to trains. These were pioneered at the station of the same name, just north of Whitehaven, and provide a cost effective alternative to raising low platforms along their full length. They are appearing at various Cumbrian Coast stations and elsewhere in the UK.
Farington Junction: DRS 47805 heads north at Farington Junction on 27 July with a Compass railtours special from Hereford to Blackpool. On the rear of the train are 37603 and 20312 which later operated a mini tour around Lancashire and West Yorkshire.
Drigg: 156426, on a Carlisle to Barrow service, calls at the Drigg request stop on the Cumbrian Coast line. The station building is now used as a craft and coffee shop. The rail served BNFL facility at Drigg lies alongside the station.
Leyland: The appearance of 45407 with support coach at Leyland on 27 July 2013 was only a surprise because it should have been accompanied by 44871 and hauled by a Class 37. The two locos had set off from Fort William the night before to attend the 45th anniversary of the 15 Guinea special on the East Lancs Railway. Unfortunately, problems with 44871 (one of the engines on the original special) resulted in 45407 making its own way on the last leg of the journey, at this stage around 90 minutes late.
Farington Curve Junction: 37603+20312 climb away from Farington Curve Jct on 27 July with a Compass Railtour from Blackpool. The tour of Lancashire and West Yorkshire included the Copy Pit climb from Burnley. Reports indicate that the train came to a stand on the climb and the assistance of 47805 on the rear was required.
Bootle: A pair of Class 153 single units calling at Bootle on a service from Barrow to Carlisle on 27 July. The station building is a private residence now but the signal box and its semaphores still control the block section and protect the level crossing.
Kirkham and Wesham: Northern 156464 on a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service heads east towards Kirkham on 27 July. In the left background is the hazy outline of Blackpool Tower, which overlooks the site of the former Blackpool Central station. The direct line to Central was on the left here and ran through the hillside in front of the tower in a cutting. In the undergrowth on the left rails from the former engineers tip still survive.
Bootle: Bootle, on the Cumbrian Coast line, looking south over the level crossing. The small signal box still controls semaphores that protect the crossing.
Brock: The Cumbrian Mountain Express railtour from Liverpool to Carlisle on 27 July 2013 on the return leg with 46233 Duchess of Sutherland displaying the Royal Scot headboard heading south on the WCML at Brock.
Drigg: Looking south towards Ravenglass at Drigg station in July 2013. The mechanical signalbox controls colour light signals that protect the level crossing and form a block section between Sellafield and Bootle boxes. Note the steps on both low platforms to allow easier access to the trains. Presumably these will in due course be replaced by the new Harrington Humps as at Seascale, the next station north of here.
Vickers Gun Range Sidings [Eskmeals]: Looking west along the remains of the short Eskmeals (Vickers Gun Range Sidings) branch to the coastal ranges that are still in use today and can be seen in the distance. Opened by the Furness Railway in 1897 and still in regular use in-the 1980s but believed to have been lifted in mid 1990s. [With thanks to all who responded] See image [[44057]] for a view in the opposite direction. Level crossings map reference SD088925
Vickers Gun Range Sidings [Eskmeals]: Looking north east along the trackbed of the Eskmeals gun range branch towards the junction with the Cumbrian Coast line as a Carlisle to Barrow service passes on 27 July 2013. The Vickers Gun Range Sidings box that controlled the branch access closed in 1983. It had an unusual Ransomes and Rapier horse rake 11-lever frame that is now preserved at the NRM York. See image [[44051]] for a view in the opposite direction. Level crossings map reference SD088925
Alne: The extent of the rebuild of the former crossing keepers cottage at Alne in this updated view shows how the original structure (centre section) has been extended. See images [[43262]] & [[80523]]
Debden: LUL 1992 stock with a Central Line train from Epping to West Ruislip arriving at Debden station on 27th July 2014. This station, opened by the GER on 24th April 1865, was known as Chigwell Lane until tube trains arrived with the electrification of the former steam line beyond Loughton as far as Epping on 25th September 1949. The main station buildings on the eastbound side (left) were partially rebuilt in 1973 although the original Victorian station house survives. As late as 1946, when still known as Chigwell Lane and then part of the LNER, the station was lit at night by oil lamps which earned it the nickname 'Paraffin Junction'. I grew up in nearby Loughton so this station has been a very familiar sight for most of my life.
Snaresbrook: Snaresbrook, LUL Central Line, looking towards central London, on 27th July 2014. This station, the prettiest in east London, was opened by the Eastern Counties Railway on 22nd August 1856 and first served by tube trains on 14th December 1947 with the extension of electrification from Leytonstone to Woodford. A bay platform once existed on the down side but was closed in 1949 and is now part of the car park. When I still lived at home with my parents and first started work, I went through this station every day on my daily commute from Loughton to Holborn in the then LU 1962 tube stock for about five years until I flew the nest.

Bunyola: Maintenance vehicle at Bunyola - even the RRVs are antiques on the Soller railway!
Wanstead: The rather plain exterior of Wanstead station, opened on 14th December 1947 with the Central Line extension from Leytonstone to Newbury Park, on 27th July 2014. The tunnels on this extension were complete before the start of World War Two and were converted into an underground factory for the manufacturing of aircraft components by the Plessey Company throughout the duration of the war.
Bunyola: Maintenance vehicle at Bunyola - even the RRVs are antiques on the Soller railway!

Roding Valley: LUL 1992 stock with a Central Line service to Woodford via Hainault at Roding Valley station on 27th July 2014. This station, on the GER's 1903 Hainault Loop, was not opened until 1936 by the LNER as Roding Valley Halt and was upgraded and rebuilt as a station for tube trains which followed completion of electrification of the former steam line from Woodford to Hainault (and from Woodford to Loughton) on 21st November 1948.
Roding Valley: LUL 1992 stock with a Central Line service from Woodford to Ealing Broadway via Hainault arriving at Roding Valley station on 27th July 2014. The train has just diverged from the Epping branch of the Central Line, this station being within view of the junction from Epping-bound trains. Since the closure of Blake Hall station in November 1981 on the Epping to Ongar section of the Central Line (that has now been partially reopened as the heritage Epping Ongar Railway) Roding Valley station has taken on the mantle of the least-used London Underground station. This is somewhat surprising since, despite its rural-looking appearance, it is surrounded by 1930s housing, the very reason it was opened as Roding Valley Halt by the LNER in 1936. First served by LUL tube trains on 21st November 1948 following electrification of the ex-LNER line between Woodford and Hainault, which date also saw the electrification of the line between Woodford and Loughton, tube trains eventually reaching Epping on 25th September 1949.

Lamington Viaduct: A TransPennine 350 heading for Manchester Airport approaching Lamington Viaduct on 27 July 2016. Photograph taken from the temporary access pathway created alongside a field between the B7055 and the north bank of the Clyde. The pathway had been used by Network Rail during the 7 week closure of the WCML earlier that year following damage to the Viaduct caused by storm Frank.
Lamington Viaduct: The 0843 London Euston - Edinburgh Waverley speeds north over Lamington Viaduct on 27 July 2016. Note the sizeable spoil heaps standing on the south bank of the Clyde, a leftover from the considerable excavation and construction work carried out on the viaduct during closure of the line in January and February following damage caused by storm Frank. See image [[54263]]
Hyndland: Seen from the Gartnavel Hospital footpath, the 0945 from Edinburgh via Falkirk High passes through Hyndland as it nears the end of its diversion during the period of closure of Queen Street High Level.

Lamington Viaduct: The 1309 Glasgow Central - Manchester Airport southbound across the Clyde over Lamington Viaduct on 27 July 2016. Note the rebuilt piers and other repairs carried out following damage caused by storm Frank at the beginning of the year, which resulted in closure of the west coast main line for more than seven weeks. The train was running at what appeared to be normal line speed - certainly a lot faster than its sister unit was on reopening day on 22 February. See image [[54263]]
Moffat: Remains of the railway bridge that once carried the Moffat branch over the A701 on its one and a half mile journey from the junction with the WCML north of Beattock. Moffat station closed to passengers in 1954, with the branch closing completely 10 years later. View is south towards Beattock on 27 July 2016. The last passenger train to cross the bridge was the SLS Easter Railtour of 29 March 1964 see image [[30082]].

Didcot Railway Centre: The Didcot Railway Centre open day, the stars being 6023 King Edward 11 and a Barclay 0-4-0ST. Talk about little and large. however the Barclay made up for its size by the sound of its Stanier hooter. Here we see 5322 and 6023 front ends.
Lamington Viaduct: Close-up taken on 27 July 2016 showing the substantial rebuilding work carried out on the piers of Lamington Viaduct following closure due to storm damage earlier this year see image [[53760]].
Moffat: One of the few surviving physical reminders of the Moffat branch. The northern abutment of the bridge that once carried the line from Beattock over the A701 to the west of the town, photographed in the summer of 2016.
Bodsberry Level Crossing: Scene just to the south of Elvanfoot on 27 July 2016 as the 0739 London Euston - Glasgow Central via Birmingham hurries past on the 73 minute final leg from Carlisle to Glasgow.
Beattock: View north west across fields on the south side of Beattock on a fine July morning in 2016. In the background the 0900 Manchester Airport - Glasgow Central is about to pass a Pendolino forming the 1051 Edinburgh - Euston via Birmingham New Street.
Didcot Parkway: GWR Adelante 180106 eastbound for Paddington alongside the Didcot Railway Centre main line. GWR King 6023 was in steam on this day and I was hoping to photograph this and a modern train together but alas it was not to be.
Didcot Parkway: Barclay 0-4-0ST. (United Steel Companies; Ore Mining Branch; Cottesmore Branch) I suspect it is on loan from the Rutland Rly. (or whatever its new name is).
Aboyne: Former Aboyne Station. This is the platform side where trains would have stopped. View looking east. The building houses a variety of small businesses, and,in common with many closed stations, the area round the building is now a car park.
Dumfries: A rail movement, hauled by 66744, from Tyne coal terminal to Hunterston passing through Dumfries on 27th July 2016.Â
Cambus o' May: A victim of the Beeching cuts,The Deeside Line closed in 1966. It ran from Aberdeen to Ballater and was used by Queen Victoria (God bless her!) and subsequent royals on their trips to Balmoral Castle.Cambus O' May was a small single platform station four miles east of Ballater. The picture shows the former station as it is today. The building is the original and is now privately owned. View looking west. John.

Troon: 1202 SX Ayr to Central rolls under the repainted footbridge. The whole station has had a makeover - if the station gets done up, the Open must be coming.
Crawford: The 1200 Glasgow Central - London Euston, having just passed Crawford and the country's largest ad for IT, is about to run below the A702, from which the photograph was taken. Less than 50 yards further on it will pass below the A74(M). In the foreground stand the remains of the bridge that once carried the original road.
Didcot Railway Centre: The Didcot Rly. Centre had an open day today (27 July), the stars being 6023 King Edward 11 and a Barclay 0-4-0ST. Talk about little and large! This view is of 6023 KE2.
Colinton Tunnel: The Edinburgh end of Colinton Tunnel on the Balerno branch in July 2017. Colinton station lay just beyond the other end of the tunnel see image [[20499]]. The line finally closed in 1967 and is now part of the Water of Leith Walkway. [Ref query 1659]
Ordsall Chord: The first track has now appeared on the new Ordsall Chord, seen here on 27 July 2017 from a train travelling between Castlefield and Ordsall Junctions. The new track is connected up to this line but at the moment only goes as far as the RRV before the bridge.
Colinton Tunnel: The south western portal of Colinton Tunnel on the Balerno branch. Photographed on 27 July 2017 from the site of Colinton station. The tunnel, which is on a contnuous south west to north curve throughout its 153 yard length, now forms part of the Water of Leith walkway. For a view of the north portal see image [[60150]].

For the record, the station was opened by the Caledonian Railway on 1 August 1874 and closed to passengers on 1 November 1943. The Balerno branch closed completely in 1967 see image [[20499]].
Rhyl Miniature Railway: 15 inch gauge 4-4-2 steam loco Michael takes another train around the lake loop at the Rhyl Miniature Railway, the oldest in the United Kingdom having been operational since 1911. The Chester and Holyhead main line runs along the embankment behind the wall seen here.
Llandudno Junction: An Arriva Class 175/0 heads away from Llandudno Junction on a service for Chester and Manchester on 27th July 2017. This image was taken from the grounds of the Welsh Mountain Zoo near Colwyn Bay and behind the train the A55 road can be seen dropping down towards the Conwy Estuary, which it tunnels under.
Rhyl Miniature Railway: Built with the assistance of a Heritage Lottery grant, this is the impressive Central station (and associated depot) of the Rhyl Miniature Railway. 4-4-2 steam loco Michael is made ready for another trip on the large circuit around the marine lake.

Uig Pier: MV Hebrides swings round the headland to approach Uig Pier on Skye after crossing from Lochmaddy (North Uist) on 27th August 2018. After a quick turnround it will be back across The Minch heading for Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.
Mallaig: Looking towards the buffer stops and station building at Mallaig on the morning of 27th July 2018. The 0603hrs to Glasgow had left on time after overnight stabling and it would be 0953hrs before the first arrival of the day.
Mallaig Pier: The other terminal building in Mallaig. These are the Calmac Ferry offices on the pier on the morning of 27th July 2018. Cars are beginning to queue for the next crossing to Armadale on Skye.
Mallaig Pier: Calmac ferry MV Loch Fyne arrives at the linkspan on Mallaig Pier after crossing from Armadale on Skye on 27th July 2018. This vessel was one of two originally built for the Kyle of Localsh to Skye service but made redundant by the bridge. Sister ship Loch Dunvegan is now the regular vessel on the short Kyles of Bute service.
Donibristle Platform: Colas 60002 leans into the curves with the Aberdeen Craiginches - Oxwellmains cement empties on 27 July. Probably the last use of this class on the service with the sale to GB Railfreight.
Uphall: An Edinburgh service calls at Uphall on 27th July 2018, to pick up what is obviously mainly daytripping custom. Note the proximity to the M8: an easterly version of Cardonald.
Mallaig Pier: Seen from a ferry departing for Armadale, Calmac MV Lord of the Isles arrives in Mallaig after crossing from Lochboisdale on South Uist in July 2018.

Wigan North Western: 150125 waits at platform 1, Wigan North Western, on 27 July 2019 with the 1650 hrs service to Manchester Piccadilly via Bolton.
Cumbernauld: A Kingussie to Polmadie sleeper ECS, hauled by an unidentified Class 73, passes Cumbernauld in heavy rain on 27th July 2019. Mk2/3 stock is still in use due to delays introducing CAF Mk5 coaches.
Blunsdon: On 27th July 2019, 'Sir Herbert Walker' visited the Swindon and Cricklade Railway - cunningly disguised as a class 73 engine. Having misread the timetable, I missed this train - we had to settle for sausage and cider.
Glasgow Queen Street High Level: With less than 48 hrs until the extended platforms 2 and 3 come in to use, there's no slacking at Queen Street on the last weekend in July 2019 as work to complete the railway infrastructure and resurface the platforms continues.
Blunsdon: Also available in red - a George VI post box, apparently in the original livery. Seen at Blunsdon, the principal station on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway, on 27th July 2019.
Haymarket: A new feature from the recent timetable change is the regular scheduling of services to start and terminate in Platform 0 at Haymarket. 170396 is seen on 27th July 2020.
Scorton [Lancashire] [1st]: The setting sun catches the side of a Class 158 as it runs alongside a swollen River Wyre at Scorton on 27th July 2020.
Haymarket: A new feature of the current (2020) timetable is trains permanently booked to terminate and start at Haymarket Platform 0. Here is the 1709hrs Haymarket-Kirkcaldy on 27th July 2020.
Pyle: D1935, passing through Pyle, on the return leg of a light engine movement between Bristol Temple Meads and Carmarthen on 27th July 2020.
Tyne Marshalling Yard: After some 15 years of visiting Tyne Yard, I finally noticed this rail-themed house name, about a kilometre to the South.
Oubeck Loops: On a misty July morning the 'Pendle Dalesman' topped the climb out of Lancaster with a Bullied Whuffle from the chimney rather than a Stanier Bark. 35018 'British India Line' took the train to Carlisle via Blackburn and the S&C. The Pacific was removed at Hellifield on the return journey and ran light engine to York to cover for a failed 46115 on the Scarborough Spa Express the following day.
Lostock Hall: Bulleid Merchant Navy 35018 'British India Line', with the WCRC 'Pendle Dalesman', passes Lostock Hall on 27 July 2021 heading to Carlisle via the S&C.
Galgate: 'Progress' Pendolino 390119 cannot be mistaken for any other train in the Avanti fleet. The multi-coloured set is seen approaching Hampson Lane bridge heading from Euston to Glasgow on 27th July 2021. The Pendolinos are approaching twenty years service and it was announced in July that 390125 had gone to Alstom at Widnes as the first of the intensively worked fleet to receive a planned overhaul. This £117m project will see them all fully modernised but also the 11-car sets are having a first class coach reclassified to create extra seats.
Beamish Open Air Museum: Very rare track: this narrow gauge line on a wooden viaduct is part of the rebuilt coal mine at Beamish. This picture was taken as I stood by a locked gate, so it is very likely that neither people nor wagons have recently travelled over this line, which represents a waste line (notice the absence of puns here) taking waste from the pit head to the nearest tip.
Oubeck Loops: After a succession of fine sunny evenings it was quite murky when I managed to venture out to Lancaster on 27th July 2021. TPE 397008 hurried through the loops at Oubeck on an Edinburgh to Manchester Airport service just as the rain started.
Lancaster: 90042 leads reliveried 90048 through Lancaster with an evening Coatbridge to Basford Hall intermodal service on 27th July 2021. 195112 is in Platform 3 bound for Barrow-in-Furness.
Beamish Open Air Museum: The replica of 'Puffing Billy' is Stephenson gauge, rather than the original five feet, to allow it to run on other preserved lines. It is seen here on the Pockerley Waggonway at Beamish in July 2021.
Lancaster: I had heard that the footbridge at Lancaster station was being refurbished but this bright white paintwork, and the white roof covering, took me by surprise. Contractors are still working as 156482 waits in Platform 5 in between evening shuttles on the Morecambe branch on 27th July 2021.
Beamish Open Air Museum: The trees have grown somewhat since Veronica Clibbery photographed this Harton Colliery Electric Railway locomotive (see image [[43656]]). Between the length of the rails and the absence of catenary, you wouldn't expect it to disturb anything.
Lancaster: 68003 'Astute', and unnamed 68033, take the Up Through line at Lancaster with two flasks from Sellafield to Crewe on 27th June 2021. These had run via Workington and over Shap.
Bay Horse: The National Rail Strike Day on 27th July 2022 again saw freight services on the WCML concentrated into a day time window, leading to some unusual sightings. GBRf 66731 'Capt. Tom Moore. A True British Inspiration', running in 'NHS' livery, was at the head of a long but fairly lightly loaded container train from Carlisle New Yard to Bescot, seen here in the cutting at Forton, just to the south of Bay Horse.
Gatehead: Track lifted following discovery of void at Gatehead. Excavations of the site uncovered an historic culvert lying underneath the railway which has now been replaced with a modern equivalent to allow the route to re-open safely. See image [[81811]].
Gatehead: Following discovery of a void alongside the track of the Kilmanock to Barassie line the railway was closed for investigations. While the line was closed, engineers also brought forward planned work on a bridge immediately west of the site, reducing the need for ongoing maintenance in the future. See image [[81812]].
Heathrow Terminal 4 [BAA]: If Gordon Steel started a competition (see image [[81760]]), I fear this is the last word - a free ticket from Terminal 2 to Terminal 4 at Heathrow. Just as well, as we had enough luggage to flatten the tyres on a taxi. It was a strike day, but the train ran.

2013 | Why a train crash like Santiago is thought to be unlikely in Britain [Guardian] | Even before the horrific crashes this month in France and Spain, Britain^s railways were the safest in Europe. Almost six years have elapsed since a train passenger died in an accident in the UK, and a European commission study this year showed the UK has the lowest fatality rate of 27 national rail networks over a decade. While industry figures warn against complacency and stress accidents could still occur, most believe a crash exactly like that in Spain could not have happened here because of the train protection and warning system (TPWS). All European countries have variants of warning systems. But Britain^s – initially regarded as a cut-price, interim solution in the wake of the 1999 Ladbroke Grove crash where 31 died after a train passed a red light – has proved remarkably effective. Transmitters have been installed in 20,000 risk locations: before every platform and single track – and ahead of curves on the track where speed limits are significantly reduced. If the train is going too fast, it brakes automatically – regardless of the driver. |
