Storlien: SJ X2000 waits in a siding for the return journey of about 750km to Stockholm. At an altitude of 592m (1942') Storlien is the highest station in Sweden. It serves a village which is a ski resort in the Jämtland mountains; the whole chain of mountains spanning the border between Norway and Sweden is known locally as the Caledonian range (for geological reasons only) see http://sciencenordic.com/content/nameless-mountain-range It is also the station closest to the border between Sweden and Norway on this line. It is seen here on the first leg of its journey at Oubeck, just south of Lancaster. Perhaps because of recent failures of other steam locomotives Brush Type 4 no 47760 was tagged on the rear - something not seen on any of the 2009 trains.

On the right is the former station building now used by the infrastructure contractor Infranord. On this day there were no trains running as the track was affected by heat distortion. This line was slated for closure in 1965 but a campaign of local people supported by Astrid Lindgren (author of Pippi Longstocking) saved it. Just around the corner in the background was the next station Stjerneskolan which was closed along with several others to speed up the service. Woodford Halse: Many major railways would ignore smaller lines crossing their main line. The GCR so welcomed the Stratford-on-Avon and Midland Joint that it put in curves heading both North and South from the 'Slow, Mouldy, and Jolting'. This is the South spur, which produced so little traffic that it closed after just a year. View looks South East through a substantial overbridge. Staverton Viaduct: This location West of Staverton is where the GC crossed the A425 between Daventry and Leamington. The road seems to have been built up since closure of the railway. I am amused that the builder of the fence seems to be keener to separate up from down traffic, than to discourage people from either falling off the abutment, or climbing up it. View looks South, and a bit West. Staverton Viaduct is a little to the south.

Edinburgh Waverley: Some CrossCountry stock loafing about at Waverley's Platform 8 on 28 July 2020. People coming to and from the station car park are unusually close to a train's undercarriage here, which seems almost indecent. There is a Notre Dame-like amount of scaffolding on the North Bridge above.

Ansdell and Fairhaven: 150140 departs Ansdell and Fairhaven heading for Kirkham and Preston on 28th July 2020. The railway now only occupies a narrow strip of land but was formerly double track and the land to the left, now an ambulance station and residential properties, was once the goods yard.

Nunthorpe: This 158 coasted to a halt at Nunthorpe, then decided to head for Metro Centre (at 19.17), rather than travelling to Whitby or Newcastle. This arrangement has advantages for local road users, as the crossing gates do not need to be lowered.

Blackhall Colliery: A Hitachi unit heads North past the village of Blackhall Colliery, approaching the reopened Horden station. The train is about to cross the line of the former coal waste conveyor which was used for disposal purposes in the climax of the classic British gangster film 'Get Carter'. What was then a very bleak beach is now a delightful spot for a picnic. (See image [[41182]]).

Farington Junction: GBRF 66789 'British Rail 1948-1997' approaches Farington Jct with the Dollands Moor to Irvine China Clay tanks on 28 July 2021. Rather than take the direct route north the train is routed over the S&C to Carlisle so it is about to take the Back Line to Lostock Hall Junction.

Prospect Hill Junction: You take the low road, and I'll take the high road, and I'll be in Scarborough afore ye: forgive the mauling of Scottish culture, but I was not aware until I set out to walk over the Larpool viaduct that there was a link line from the upper level to the lower level: this is the junction. I was assured by a friendly local that the line is walkable all the way down the hill. As General MacArthur said when retreating from the Philippines in World War 2, I shall return; in my case, without the US Army. View looks South. Care point for explorers: car parking in this area is difficult.

Horden: 60085 has a sinister look about it as it hauls biomass wagons South towards Horden station, relocated and reopened on 29th June 2020 - possibly with a somewhat muted ceremony.

Euxton Junction: 47828 leads the 'Cumbrian Coast Statesman' railtour to the south of Euxton Junction on 28 July 2021. The tour was returning to Hereford following a day out to Ravenglass. On the rear was another Brush Type 4 D1935, aka 47805.

Castle Eden: Highways England please note: it is possible to reinforce a bridge over a disused railway (just by Castle Eden station, out of sight beyond the bridge on the left) so that road traffic can pass overhead (on the B1281 Stockton Road) and ramblers and cyclists can pass underneath. Frankly, it looks like theres room for trains here as well. Perchance to dream.

Woodacre Crossing: A friendly wave from the driver of D8096, working in tandem with D8107, approaching Woodacre on 28th July 2022. He had also just accelerated briefly to ensure he reached the footbridge ahead of a fast approaching northbound Sprinter - thank you Sir! The load is another sold DRS locomotive, 57007, on the move to a new owner but initially to Crewe.

2013A platform to build on at Manuel [Linlithgow Gazette]All roads, well railway tracks at least, led to Bo’ness on Monday morning for a key announcement from the Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS). For the past year it has been full steam ahead to create a new halt for the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway at the former Manuel Junction adjacent to the Edinburgh/Glasgow main line. The new halt was formally opened by Linlithgow and East Falkirk MP Michael Connarty MP and his wife, Margaret, and marks a significant milestone for the SRPS. It might have taken 30 years to make the link with the main line but the future is looking rosy for the charity which moved to Bo’ness from Falkirk in the early 1980s and which has gone from strength to strength, bringing around 60,000 visitors to Bo’ness annually. With the link to Manuel now fully operational, passengers can enjoy a 10-mile round trip and future plans include a car park at Manuel and, eventually, a booking
office to enable passengers to travel into Bo’ness from the new platform, a move which the SRPS is confident will
benefit Bo’ness.

But while the scenery may be spectacular, one Glasgow councillor says ScotRail^s trains on the famous West Highland Line are ^letting Scotland down.^ Passengers say the service is not getting the investment it needs, despite attracting swathes of tourists each year. Complaints include frequent breakdowns, heating problems during the height of winter and poor quality trains. Passengers travelling from Fort William to Glasgow on one of last week^s early morning services had no access to a toilet on the four-hour journey because both were broken. Regular passengers say they are often advised to move to a warmer coach by ticket staff.[From Dave Scott]

There would also be new retail space and a mezzanine floor. The work coincides with plans to revamp that area of the city centre which is where the new BBC building will be. A new bus terminal is also being built in the area. The earliest work on the station could start would be 2019 but Network Rail have yet to fully cost the multi-million pound plans.
