Lugton: Railbus SC79958 enters Lugton on 3 November 1962 , prior to heading to Beith. This would be one of its last runs, as the branch closed the following day. The line to Giffen remained open for goods traffic for some time after that.

Balornock Shed: A4 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' about to head north light engine from Balornock (St Rollox) engine shed, probably returning to the home depot of Ferryhill on 3rd November 1965. The morning three-hour express from Aberdeen was at first thought to have been the reason for the loco to be in Glasgow, but the train had in fact been brought in that day by a BRCW Type 2, so the cause of the distinguished A4's presence remained a mystery.

Grangemouth No 3 Signal Box: Grangemouth Yard as viewed from the west end, probably from the footbridge adjacent to Dock Road level crossing. In 1971 the yard was only a shadow of it's former self, albeit there is evidence of cement, oil and coal traffic (in 16T mineral wagons) still being handled. This was the afternoon of an Edinburgh University Railway Society brake van trip from Grangemouth to Bandeath, for which the motive power was expected to by an NBL Type 2 - it was a bit of a disappointment that a BR Sulzer Type 2 No. D5009 (transferred earlier in the year from the Stoke Division to Eastfield) was provided. Of course only a few years later, a trip behind a by then class 24 would also be much sought after!

Grangemouth No 4 Signal Box (West Cut): Perusal of the OS 25 inch map for 1947 would suggest that this is the swing bridge which catered for both road and rail traffic across the West Cut between the Western Channel and Carron Dock at Grangemouth. The weather had been sunny when we arrived at Grangemouth but it seems to have clouded over and this was the last of only four shots I took that day, suggesting the weather had really deteriorated by the time we got to Bandeath.

Burscough Bridge: Class 25 Bo-Bo No. 25153 has set its train of ballast wagons back onto the West to South chord at Burscough Bridge to allow a Derby Class 108 DMU to pass on its way to Southport. The main line is protected by catch points and the small ground shunting signal or dolly. The chord was still in occasional use at this time to access an MOD Depot at Burscough Junction. The Preston to Ormskirk line can be seen in the background crossing the Wigan line and the formation of the West to North curve starts just behind the signal box. See image [[22976]] for a Then and Now comparison.

Rainford: A Cravens DMU heads away from Rainford Junction on the single line section to the Merseyrail interchange at Kirkby. The DMU is just about at the point where the direct line from Ormskirk to St. Helens passed over this line. The curving platform seen here was used by passenger trains to Ormskirk until 1951 and a mirror platform on the other side catered for St. Helens services until the same year. Rainford Junction is largely unchanged today and the signalman still emerges from the box to hand over or collect the staff from trains on the single line stub. See image [[27639]]

Burscough Bridge: 25153 brings its train of ballast hoppers to a halt in Burscough Bridge station, prior to setting them back onto the Burscough Junction chord to allow a DMU to pass See image [[22975]]. The chord has since been lifted and the Rip Raps no longer clatter round the North West. 25153 was withdrawn in 1983, after some 19 years service, and cut up at Swindon four years later.

Aberdeen Waterloo: View south towards Waterloo in 1989. The line was closed at the time. The peculiar curvature of the line on the right sidestepped the signal box. But, before that, the line on the right served a two road carriage shed in the foreground. Some years after that was removed, the line was looped to improve facilities at Waterloo.

Kittybrewster [1st]: View of Kittybrewster in 1989. Oil sidings here had been lifted and the site was being redeveloped. Kittybrewster [1st], on the line down to Waterloo, was close to the camera and Kittybrewster [2nd], on the Denburn Valley line, was beyond on the main line. Before these, the first station here was a terminus called Aberdeen Kittybrewster. David Spaven comments 'there was a major domestic coal terminal here, served by hopper wagons. I was the Speedlink Coal manager responsible for shifting the coal handling activity down to Guild Street, immediately adjacent to the Russell (ex Freightliner) intermodal terminal, with coal arriving from Yorkshire and South Wales by container. The Baker Atlas for 1988 shows Ellis & McHardy Coal Depot, Lime and LPG Terminals.'

The second platform was also still there but because these were staggered it is off in the distance. The first 'Kittybrewster' station was off to the right on the Waterloo branch. The first station, however, was 'Aberdeen Kittybrewster', a terminus, which was in approximately the same location as the second Kittybrewster.

It has just passed the overgrown 1963 Kingmoor box standing alongside the bridge that carried the Waverley route over the WCML. The bridge is currently used by the remaining stub of the Waverley, now serving a warehouse on Kingstown industrial estate at Brunthill, just to the east. This short branch is accessed from the southwest corner of the yard via a siding beyond the trees on the right leading to a reversing neck at Stainton.

The minister was eventually released, the crossing cleared, David Steel returned to bed and Peak class locomotive no 60 Lytham St Annes finally got the last train underway, more than a little behind schedule. The laden ballast trains operating during the construction of the Borders Railway - at 2,900 tonnes 'gross trailing load' - were by far the heaviest freights in Scotland at the time. These were operated at slow speeds due to several bridge weight restrictions, but there was nevertheless some irony in the presence of such giant trains when the railway establishment had - at least initially - set its face against the possibility of accommodating any commercial freight traffic on the re-opened Borders Railway. This photograph is used on the front cover of David Spaven's book Waverley Route: The battle for the Borders Railway. See article!

Bath Junction: Just when I thought I had thoroughly explored the remains of the S&D in Bath, I find a bit more trackbed. This may be parking for two car dealers and a police station, but the brick hut on the right is a clue. The S&D ran to the left, the Midland to the right - possibly separated by the fence in the background. This location is a few yards West of my previous shot see image [[37250]].

Bellanoch Basin: Elevated view of the Crinan Canal and Bellanoch Basin on 3rd November 2022. The very low water level in the canal, and the normally busy basin, was because it had been drained for major works around the lock flights, including replacement of several gates. The scenic waterway winds around the hillside and then passes left to right just above the sea. After passing the white cottage it turns to go around the headland, beyond which is Crinan Basin. The land visible beyond the Crinan headland is the island of Scarba, and between there and (out of sight to the left) Jura is the famous Corryvreckan Whirlpool.
