Festiniog Railway

Introduction

This is a scenic 1ft 11.5in gauge railway between Porthmadog Harbour uphill to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The line was opened to transport slate from the quarries at Ffestiniog downhill to the harbour in 1836. It is now a preserved steam railway carrying passengers. More usually known as the Ffestiniog Railway, the spelling was 'Festiniog' in the railway act. Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways

Porthmadog Harbour

The harbour station is the southern terminus of the line. A new platform face now served the Welsh Highland Railway. The harbour station and new slate wharf were on the east side of the Afon Glaslyn. A continuation over the river served further slate wharfs on the west side, extending south through Garth.

The northern, Blaenau Ffestiniog, terminus of the line is on this portion.

The branch extended through stations associated with the London and North Western Railway terminus (Blaenau Ffestiniog North) and Great Western Railway (Blaenau Ffestiniog Central) terminus to Duffws and beyond to serve slate quarries.

Link to Welsh Highland Railway

This was re-opened largely along the course of a former connection.

The earlier connection was formed by various developments and lines. From Porthmadog Harbour over Britannia Bridge to High Street follows part of the course of a Festiniog line to Porthmadog Wharf. From High Street to Snowdon Street is partly a new formation and partly some of the former Tremadoc Tramway. North, over the Aberystwyth and Welch Coast Railway, to Beddgelert Siding was part of the Croesor Tramway.
