Harwich Town

Before the Channel Tunnel was opened, Harwich Town station saw considerable train ferry activity, as seen here in April 1978 with 08 460 (the regular engine) drawing out the traffic from Zeebrugge. Usually, loading and unloading was timed with the tide to ensure the ship to shore ramp was horizontal, but in later years staff became more prepared to attempt the job with the ramp set at a very steep angle. Perhaps by trial and error, they discovered that Class 08 locos are quite capable of hauling heavy loads up 30 degree slopes!
