The Lancaster Canal celebrated the bi-centenary of its opening to Kendal in 2019 and there were a number of commemorative events, such as the reinstatement of the milestones that had gone missing over the years, including this one between Nateby and Winmarleigh. Rather like railway mileposts, canal milestones measure the distance you have travelled rather than 'to go' and so the side showing 'Garstang 2' is seen as you travel towards Lancaster and 'Lancaster 11' as you head south. The Lancaster Canal company actually bought out the Lancaster and Preston Junction Railway, but was in turn bought by the LNWR and operated by them, and then the LMSR, until 1947. Photographed on 12th April 2020, ancillary to a daily permitted exercise walk during the Covid-19 emergency.
