By 2019, the Edinburgh/Glasgow/Dunblane/Alloa electrification project was substantially complete with sufficient new rolling stock to implement faster and more frequent commuter services. Longer trains called at extended platforms to cater for the rush hour peaks, and a major rebuild was in progress at Glasgow Queen Street. Shown here is the 08.16 Dunblane-Glasgow EMU about to start its journey on Christmas Eve of that year. At the time, everything appeared set for the huge investment to be repaid handsomely by increased commuter revenue for the foreseeable future. With 2020 hindsight, that forecast turned out to be rather optimistic....
