In its early days Diggle was a small stopping point but when Micklehurst Loop line was built, followed by the Standedge route quadrupling, it was rebuilt into a four platform junction station, albeit in a relatively remote location. The station closed in 1968 and was demolished although the hump of the central island platform can still be seen, as in this June 2024 view from near the Standedge Tunnel portal. The complex history of this station is well covered and illustrated on the excellent Disused Stations website.
