Sowerby Bridge

When the L&YR moved Sowerby Bridge station eastwards in 1876 it was intended to be an important junction with the projected line to Littleborough and a large building was built in the 'V' of that junction. Prior to 1980, when it was demolished, this view from the station approach would have been of an imposing building, at right angles to the surviving line and platforms. In the event the proposed line petered out near Rishworth and the branch railmotor service did not even warrant full platforms being constructed. The former office buildings on the left, now refreshment rooms, are a fortunate survivor.
