Standedge Tunnel

Although Standedge Canal Tunnel was completed in 1811 (after 17 years construction), this date stone at the western portal reads 1893. When the additional double track tunnel was bored the canal tunnel had to be extended by 242 yards to a total of 5675 yards. Construction of the rail tunnels was aided by spoil being removed by canal via connecting adits. The last boat passed through in 1944 but it was restored and reopened in 2001. Standedge trains pass close by here and the rails can just be seen above the wall to the right of the tunnel mouth.
