The old rails at Appleby Level Crossing can still be seen poking through the tarmac, despite the county council's best efforts to cover them over. The crossing is directly north of Appleby East station on the old Eden Valley Railway between Penrith and Kirkby Stephen, which was once part a cross-country route from the North-East to Workington. It closed to passengers in 1962 but the line from Appleby to Warcop remained open to serve the army base at Warcop until 1989.
