Manchester Oxford Road: Hard to say whether the liveries of these diesel units at Manchester Oxford Road were pleasingly varied or garish, but this was how things looked in August 2009.

Newton Heath: When the Manchester and Leeds Railway was built in the 1830s it crossed St Mary's Road, between Newton Heath and Moston, diagonally on a low bridge with small portals at sharp angles to the road. Later, road and railway were both widened with a new bridge. This distinctive structure, with steel arches over the tracks was the result. Once seen from the front windows of DMUs, nowadays passed unseen by most passengers, but captured on 11th October 2024. Note three running lines now reduced to two. The train is alongside Newton Heath depot looking back northwards. Authorised photo by Dale Farrer.

Hawarden Bridge: 230010 pulls away from Hawarden Bridge, crossing the River Dee on the magnificent bridge, heading for Wrexham on 16th October 2024. Shotton High Level station, and the North Wales Coast main line, are just beyond the bridge but it is interesting to alight at this request stop and walk into Shotton on the public greenway attached to the side of the old swing bridge.

Preston: The driver of 68018 'Vigilant' returns to his cab just prior to departure of this RHTT train from Preston on 16th October 2024. The schedule allows for a crew break of just under an hour at Preston before heading northwards again. 68004 'Rapid' was on the rear for this next leg.

Oubeck Loops: Distinctive Pendolino 390121 approaches Oubeck Loops with 9M55, from Glasgow Central to Euston via Birmingham, on 25th September 2024. I had seen this train five hours earlier passing Lancaster with a Birmingham to Glasgow service and it passed here again some seven hours later on its final train of the day, 1S95, the 1830hrs Euston to Glasgow. The red building top right of the picture is the Sports Hall at the University of Lancaster.

Swindon Works: 97653, (formerly PWM653), receives attention at Swindon Works in November 1983. The Western Region had a fleet of five of these diesel-electric shunters that worked mainly in the Civil Engineers pre-assembly depots like Taunton Fairwater yard. They would also be used in engineers' possessions. Three of the five were preserved but this example was scrapped.
