Southport: Control desk of Merseyrail 507003, pressed into service at Southport on 2nd November 2024 to cover for a failed 777 unit. In a broad Liverpool accent, the driver said of the cabs of the old units – ‘dirty, noisy, crampt (sic) and draughty’. That said they have served Merseyrail well for nearly half a century and certainly repaid their original investment many times over.
Haymarket MPD: The classic pose of a 47 on the shed at Edinburgh Haymarket no doubt off a East Coast service. 47421 looks nice but I did not like this engine it would replace Deltics and 40s back in those days. A very common ECML Gateshead based loco. Not content with that it would turn up at Penzance if I was in the Southwest and just about anywhere else I went too.
Lydgate Viaduct: Viewed from the top floor of Robinwood Mill, during a private visit by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Society, 195103 rolls over Lydgate Viaduct towards Kitson Wood Tunnel with an empty stock working from Blackpool North to Leeds on 12th October 2024. It was interesting to see that the skew arch, normally in line with a watercourse, crosses a minor road while the Redmires Water passes under the next arch. Was the stream diverted via a local mill at some point after the viaduct was constructed?
Southport: Commemorative banner displayed at Southport during the Class 507 Farewell Railtour on 3rd November 2024.
Midcalder Junction: A shot, thought to date from 1981, of Midcalder Junction with a DMU taking the Shotts line.
Blackhorse Road [LTPB]: Mural at the entrance to the 1968 Blackhorse Road LU Victoria Line station, also served by London Overground, on Thursday, 24th October 2024. This entrance was adapted slightly in 1981 when new walkways and a footbridge were added to the re-sited British Rail platforms (London Overground since 2015) to provide a direct connection between the two (lifts have since been provided) and which saw the separate 1894 station on the opposite of the road closed and subsequently demolished. Prior to 1981, interchange passengers had to come out of one station, cross a busy road, and then go into the other.
Kirkcaldy: 66746 passes the Kirkcaldy Down Loop with the Perth - Edinburgh (via Linlithgow and Dunfermline) leg of the final 'Royal Scotsman' excursion of the 2024 season.
Maghull North: The 'Sefton Sparkler' Class 507 Farewell Railtour makes a photo stop at Maghull North, one of the newest stations on the Merseyrail network, before continuing towards Ormskirk on 3rd November 2024. Note the original Merseyrail symbol headboard being carried on 507001.
Aberdeen Waterloo: COLAS 70814 about to depart Aberdeen Waterloo, under headcode 6R38, to Irvine Caledonia paper mill on 1st November 2024.
Strowan Tunnel: With Sir David Baird's monument in the foreground, the Crieff to Comrie line can be seen in the background by the river in this view looking south.
Wormit: Last day of services at Wormit station, 3rd May 1969, with a Metro-Cammell DMU bound for Newport.
