London Victoria: 44871 now arrived back at London Victoria with the conclusion of The Railway Touring Company's Armistice Day excursion to Canterbury West and back, at 18.25 on 11th November 2024. A two minutes silence had taken place on this train at 11.00 at Charing station, on the Maidstone East line in Kent, after it had stopped there for water. The return from Canterbury West was via Minster, Sandwich, Deal, Dover Priory, Folkestone West, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and Bat & Ball before rejoining its outward route at Otford.
New Mills Central: Viewed from New Mills town centre, looking down towards Central station from above the tunnel mouth on 30th October 2024. 195122, on a local service to Sheffield, has just left the station. Below the retaining wall is the River Goyt and part of the Millennium Walkway [[89747]].
Forrestfield: A shot, thought to date from 1972, of Forrestfield signal box and part of the loading bank. The station closed to passengers on 22nd September 1930, with goods traffic continuing until 1st October 1958. The Register of Closed Signal Boxes shows the closure date of that as 08/06/1939 but I think that may be an error.
Dumfries Shed: An ordinary passer-by would notice very little of the former Dumfries station immediately south of the current station. This site replaced the original terminus station further south. To the east of the line was Dumfries shed [[85802]]. Designed by Andrew Galloway, it boasted 6 roads which were approached from the south. The shed closed to steam in 1966 and was demolished in 1981. The shed site now houses the Galloway Police Headquarters.
National Museum of Scotland: These visitors are inspecting the Beardmore collecting shell formerly at Glasgow Queen Street and now in the top floor gallery about modern Scotland at the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
Colne Valley Viaduct: HS2's Colne Valley viaduct has scooped a prestigious design award. The High speed rail bridge wins in the 'engineering' category of the Royal Fine Art Commission Trusts Building Beauty Awards - 2024 .
Comrie Viaduct: The line west to Balquhidder ran through here on its approach to the Comrie Viaduct over the River Earn - the first of four bridges over the Earn between Comrie and St Fillans. The course of the line through Comrie has been largely obliterated. Just west of the former Comrie station it is a car park, then a footpath, a series of houses, another car park, a dental surgery and another house before reaching the Earn. This view looks west from the car park over the A85 to the surgery.
Ramsbottom: Fish and Chip Special! At the end of Day One of the ELR DMU Gala the HST ran into Ramsbottom sidings to change platforms at the station. Seen here slowly approaching the level crossing with 43089 leading. A late bonfire lightens the sky. As the train rolled by a 4-wheel platform trolley appeared stacked high with fish and chip suppers, local chippy must have been on overtime!
