Abernant: Abernant on 29th April 1972. This was the occasion of the Dean Forest Railway Preservation Society's tour from Gloucester to various lines in South Wales. The 'Sospan Fach Railtour' worked by a Cardiff Canton based Swindon Class 120 3-car DMU. Pretty poor Welsh weather here in the morning but it improved later.
Westcraigs Junction: When this shot was taken in early 1980, Westcraigs Junction signal box was closed and work to single the line between Bathgate and Airdrie was underway although this proved to be a short term measure as total closure as far as Springbank siding at Plains took place in February 1982. The trackbed heading off left behind the box ran via Shotts NB to join the line from Bathgate to Morningside and closed in stages in the 50s and early 60s.
Bo'ness: Former National Coal Board, East Fife Area, Hunslet 0-6-0ST no. 19, with a passanger train consisting of a Swedish Railways carriage and others leaving Bo'ness for Birkhill in 1988.
Birmingham Grand Central [Tram]: A tram for Edgbaston Village approaches what any sensible person would call the New Street stop.
Brinnington Tunnel: The eastern portal, or Woodley end, of 168 yards long Brinnington Tunnel in January 2025. It is now used by the Midshires Way cycle route but was driven through a ridge that separates the valleys of the Goyt and Thame rivers. The last trains through the tunnel ran towards the end of 1986, when the remains of this through route were cut back from Stockport Portwood to the new Bredbury stone terminal.
Brinnington Tunnel: The west portal of the restored Brinnington Tunnel, now part of the Midshires cycle route, on 15th January 2025. After through trains to Cheadle Junction ceased in 1980, stone trains to Stockport Portwood continued to pass through but in 1986 the stone terminal was moved eastwards to Bredbury (where it continues to receive rail traffic) and the line between Stockport and there was lifted to allow the M60 Motorway to be built. Conversion to a cycle route and reopening of the tunnel occurred in 1990.
Innerpeffray Bridge: This overgrown timber object was found at the location of the down distant for Innerpeffray station, on the south side of the line.
Clapham Junction: A telephoto shot at the end of the platform at Clapham Junction, looking towards Vauxhall and Waterloo, finds 66531 approaching with the Mountfield - Southampton freight. This was a GB Railfreight flow but is now operated by Freightliner. About to block my view is 450003 on a Portsmouth Harbour service with 5716 passing , heading for Waterloo. Nice low sun makes a good picture.
