Glenfinnan: During her celebrated run on the Mallaig extension in May 1984, preserved NBR 0-6-0 ‘Maude’ ran into difficulty on the way back to Fort William. The steep climb from Loch Eilt required at least three attempts before being completed. The photograph shows ‘Maude’ approaching the summit when finally making it to the top.

Rawtenstall: One of the nice things about heritage railways is the creation of alternative realities. A mere eight years after I rode behind the prototype HST power car on the GCR(N) , see image [[54338]], here is a full, production HST pulling into Rawtenstall on the ELR in June 2025. The usual timetable problems at a heritage railway gala led to me getting a free seat on a steam train to return me to my car, as it was the only train left that day going to Rawtenstall; and sounded distinctly more fun than the bus alternative.

Cults Lime Works: The remains of the Cult Lime Works (east site), with some buildings now in other commercial use, as seen from the road in April 2025. A tramway from various lime kilns operated at a higher level running onto the stone structure on the left. The standard gauge branch from near Springfield ran at this level here and through to the west works.

Edinchip Viaduct [C and O]: The bridge by Edinchip House is in trees in the bottom centre of this view. Edinchip House itself is near the centre of the view, just to the right and up a bit. Loch Earn is in the distance. The owner of Edinchip House, Sir Malcolm Murray-MacGregor, objected to the building of the Callander and Oban Railway. Years later his widow was to object to the building of the Lochearnhead, St Fillans and Comrie Railway which was not quite so close to the house.
