Groombridge: Thumper DEMU 1317 at Groombridge, on Day 1 of the Spa Valley, Cuckoo Line Gala. It was very hot on 13th June 2025.
Ormskirk: Ormskirk, looking north from the buffer stops that separate this long single platform, at 17.16 on Tuesday, 29th April 2025. This has been the case since through services between Liverpool and Preston via this route were withdrawn by BR on 3rd May 1970. The whole line had been listed for closure in the 1963 Beeching Report and although saved, economies saw it split with the northern part of the platform used by diesel services to Preston, while electric services to Liverpool (now Merseyrail Northen Line ) serve the southern section that previously used a south-facing bay platform. (A similar layout existed at Kirkby station until 5th October 2023 when Merseyrail services were extended to a brand new station at Headbolt Lane, which then became the interchange for Northern services to Manchester Victoria.)
Pitlessie Maltings: Pitlessie Maltings, now converted into a residential apartment block, looking eastwards on the A914 road on 19th April 2025. A roadside tramway ran from a siding and loop outside this building, alongside the road for about one mile, until it joined the branch to Cults Lime Works. With a reversal there, traffic could access the main line railway near Springfield station. See image [[55330]] of this building in 1992.
Portobello East Junction: A shot believed to date from 1973, of the track layout at Portobello East Junction prior to the abolition of the signal box in May of that year. The view is looking east, with the Waverley Route going off to the right. Ahead, the bridge spanning the ECML, which carried the Lothian Lines from Niddrie North to Leith, is still in situ.
Inverkeithing South Junction: 37403 brings up the rear of 'The Lochalsh Chopper' from Inverness to Carlisle on 23 June 2025 as it passes the closed and disconnected Rosyth Dockyard branch. 20132 and 20118 were up front and handed over to 87002 at Carlisle to continue to Crewe.
Newsham: 158845 arrives at Newsham with a service from Ashington, crossing the site of now closed Newsham South level crossing which has been replaced by an overbridge to the south of this new station. A short branch to Newsham Colliery left the main Blyth and Tyne line at this point and headed north east through the area now occupied by the housing estate.
Edinchip Accommodation Bridge: This is the rather nice accommodation bridge above Edinchip House. I was quite surprised by the level of growth of trees since my visit in 1997 (see image [[70717]]).
Watford High Street: 710264, London Overground Euston to Watford Junction, departing from its penultimate stop at Watford High Street at 12.59 on Saturday, 31st May 2025. A visit to a friend's Amateur Dramatics Group's latest production for a matinee performance (which was excellent) at a theatre in Watford had brought me here on this afternoon, the hottest day of the year so far at 26C (80F) but superseded by the hideous 34C (96F) heatwave the London area has been experiencing for several days, a month later.
