Barleith Signal Box (1898-1940)

Opened on the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway.

Description

This location was south of Hurlford on the main line to Dumfries. It was a junction providing access to Barleith Pit No 2 which was on the west side, served from the north.

The colliery was closed in the 1890s.

The box opened in 1898 (the siding was older than this) and was replaced in 1915 closing in 1940 when replaced by Bowhouse Signal Box to the south to serve a wartime location, an Air Ministry Munitions depot.

The main line remains open.
