Name and dates

Bedlington Viaduct (1850-)

Opened on the Bedlington Private Railway.

Description

This double track iron viaduct over the River Blyth is south of the former Bedlington station on the still open Blyth and Tyne Railway network. The present bridge dates from 1930, replacing an original timber from 1850.

The original timber bridge was built in 1850 for the Bedlington Coal Company, part of a private line extending from Newsham to Bedlington serving collieries at Bebside and Bedlington.

The present iron bridge was built for the London and North Eastern Railway in 1930. It was erected on the east side of the original bridge which was demolished once the line was diverted over the new bridge.

Also known as Blyth Viaduct or Kitty Brewster Viaduct.
