Name and dates

Callander Viaduct (1870-1965)

Opened on the Callander and Oban Railway.

Description

This bowstring girder viaduct was west of Callander (Dreadnought), the line crossing from the north bank to the south bank of the Garbh Uisge. The east end had a single plate girder approach.

The viaduct was strengthened as loadings and locomotive weights increased.

The viaduct was removed after closure. A footbridge was installed to allow the trackbed to be reopened as a footpath.

Local

Bochastle Roman Fort

Half a mile west of Callander Viaduct the railway embankment passed through the southern part of the site of Bochastle Roman Fort. Although short lived, some remains are still visible - the western rampart of the fort with an obvious gap which was a gateway.
