Pass of Leny South Viaduct

Location type

Bridge

Name and dates

Pass of Leny South Viaduct (1870-1965)

Opened on the Callander and Oban Railway.

Description

This bowstring viaduct crossed over the Garbh Uisge in the Pass of Leny. For an Oban bound (westbound) train it crossed from the south to the north bank. The location was alongside the Falls of Leny. The viaduct was completed in 1867 by John Mackay.

This bridge was strengthened when loads and locomotives increased in weight.

The viaduct was demolished after closure. The abutments remain but it was not replaced when the former railway trackbed was converted into a foot/cycle path - instead this continues alongside on the south/west bank until regaining the trackbed at the Pass of Leny North Viaduct.

Local

The Leny Estate is at Kilmahog, just west of Callander (Dreadnought).
