This junction gave access to the Drumshangie Colliery branch from the North Monkland Railway. The branch ran to the south from the main line and was approached from the east. The branch, and colliery, was closed by 1910.
The branch ran south to Drumshangie Colliery Pit No 6, which was accessed from the north and on the east side of the branch, before splitting into two lines, one ran south west to Drumshangie Colliery Pit No 9 and the other ran south east to Drumshangie Colliery Pit No 3 and, beyond, Drumshangie Colliery Pit No 1. A tramway continued from no 1 to Drumshangie Colliery Pit No 11.
Much of the area has been opencast and although the junction site still exists the branch and colliery site is largely obliterated.
