Name and dates

Gartcosh Steelworks (1865-1986)

Served by the Gartcosh Steelworks (British Steel Corporation).

Description

This steel works was associated with Ravenscraig Steel Works, a finishing plant further rolling strip coil from the works. It was located on the north side of the railway at Gartcosh Junction and rail served. It was originally opened in 1865 by William Gray & Co, known as the Woodneuk Iron Works.

With the site being directly north of the junction and incoming coil coming from the Motherwell direction approach was by entering reversing sidings west of the junction, then running to a yard on the south side of the works directly north of the junction. From here sidings approached the older part of the works to the west, curving west and then north, and also ran east to a reversing spur east of the works before running west again to reach the newer 1960s part of the works.

The works was rebuilt in the 1960s, increasing considerably in size with new sheds built to the east of the older part of the works, which was also rebuilt.

The works began as an offshoot of the nearby Gartcosh Fireclay Works, the Gartcosh Iron and Steel Works. The earlier layout had the works approached by a siding running north from the west side of Gartcosh Junction.

Some steel coil was exported through Grangemouth Grange Dock.

The works closed in 1986, before the Ravenscraig Steel Works. The sidings were lifted relatively soon afterwards, around 1989, but the buildings survived for several years.

The site remained vacant for a long time. Most of the site still is vacant.
