The River Bank Engine Works of Barclays & Co was located at the south end of Low Glencairn Street, on its west side close to the bridges. This works was setup by Andrew Barclay for his brother John Barclay and Andrew's four sons James Wilson Barclay, Andrew Barclay [Junior] , William Barclay and Robert Barclay. While the works was in operation it had no railway connection (subsequently the same site was a tram depot and rail served power station).
The works was in operation between 1872 and 1888 when it closed due to bankruptcy.
