River Bank Gas Works

Served by the Thirdpart Junction to Mayfield Junction (Glasgow and South Western Railway).

Description

This gas works was in the south of Kilmarnock. It was rail served by a branch from the Thirdpart Junction to Mayfield Junction (Glasgow and South Western Railway).

Approach was originally from the west. The line was cut back in 1938, the route between the former Riccarton Signal Box and Thirdpart Junction being lifted. The remaining line from Bellfield Junction to the site of the signal box was retained as a headshunt for the gas works. There were several looped sidings here.

Within the works was a high level line which ran through on a south-west to north-east orientation and ran through to Greenholm Power Station. (This site had previously been River Bank Engine Works, the Kilmarnock Cattle Market, Kilmarnock Tram Depot before becoming Greenholm Power Station.) Lower level sidings connected the gas works and the power station.

The gasworks is closed. A single gasometer remains today, on the west bank of the Kilmarnock Water.
