Opened 1884 by the Bent Colliery Co Ltd. Coal was later won from under Hamilton Palace itself and the mausoleum.
It was served by a joint Caledonian Railway and North British Railway - the Hamilton Palace Colliery Railway (Caledonian Railway and North British Railway Joint). This ran north, splitting to approach the two companies lines separately where the Glasgow, Bothwell, Hamilton and Coatbridge Railway (later the NB) crossed over the Clydesdale Junction Railway (later the Caley). The connection with the former was close to Bothwell Park Signal Box and the latter at Hamilton Palace Junction.
