This signal box was north west of Motherwell on the direct line to Newton. It was a little to the west of the viaduct over the South Calder Water, Orbiston Viaduct.
The box was on the south side of the line with sidings for Orbiston Colliery Pits Nos 1 and 2 on the north side, approached from the east.
A tramway ran north from the colliery to Bellshill Colliery Pit No 3 which was served by a mineral line from Bellshill station goods yard, to the north again.
The signal box closed in 1933.
The railway remains open and is electrified. It provides a suitable route for non-stop services to Glasgow.
