This is a two platform station on the line between Newcastle and Carlisle. It is probably the most important intermediary station. The station is a little to the north of Hexham's town centre.
The station had two platforms and gained a bay platform at the west end, on the south side of the line, with the opening of the Border Counties Railway. Later an additional platform was added on the north side, approached from the east.
There were goods yard at either end on the south side. The smaller (the coal drops) was to the west, south of the bay platform, and approached from the west. This is now the car park. The larger yard was to the east and approached from the east. Hexham Shed was in the northern part of this goods yard.
The station remains in a good state of repair with the main building (partly two storeys and extended several times) on the south (town) side and canopied platforms. There is a footbridge at the east end. There was a signal box at the west end and a gantry mounted signal box remains at the east end.
In the very early days Hexham was briefly the terminus of the line from 1834 (goods and minerals, opened to passengers 1835) until extension west in 1836. Until 1844 the line east to Stocksfield was single track.
