Kings Cross opened (Maiden Lane closed).

The first underground railway in the World is opened to the public with stations at Paddington (Bishop's Road), Edgware Road, Baker Street, Portland Road, Gower Street, Kings Cross and Farringdon Street. The line was mixed gauge with both standard and broad gauge.
15/01/1897North British Railway
The North British Railway begins to operate the through trains from Edinburgh Waverley to London Kings Cross from Edinburgh as far as Berwick where the North Eastern Railway takes over.
22/07/1901West Highland Railway
Sleeper cars from Kings Cross to Fort William commence.
