This ground frame is north east of Fort William Junction on the route south to Glasgow. It provides access to the aluminium smelter, Lochaber Aluminium Works, by Fort William which is on the south side of the line. The sidings are entered from the west. A short dead end siding provides provides protection against runaway wagons for the line.
It was initially laid in to reach Base Camp, Balfour, Beatty & Co Ltd's depot for the construction of the smelter. On completion of the works in 1929 there were sidings for incoming alumina and outgoing aluminium slabs (which has ceased in recent years). Loaded alumina trains are reversed into the works, the receiving sidings are on the south side of the works.
