Lumphinnans No 1 Colliery (1852-1957)

Open on the Fife Coal Co Ltd.

Description

The oldest parts of this colliery date back to 1826 when the Forth Iron Works (Oakley Iron Company) operated a number of iron and coal mines in the area.

This colliery was opened next to what then the new Dunfermline Branch (Edinburgh and Northern Railway) (opened this far by 1848) by the Cowdenbeath Coal Company. The colliery was on the west side of the line and served by a branch from Lumphinnans Colliery Junction.

Initially it was to provide iron stone to Lumphinnans Iron Works.

The Fife Coal Co Ltd took control in 1896.
