This colliery was opened by Colonel Robertson Aikman in 1883. It was located on the east side of Ross Junction and sidings approached it from the south. Ross Yard was laid out to the south.
The Coltness Iron Company sublet the colliery from the lessee Thomas Barr. Archibald Russell later sublet the colliery.
The Colonel bought the neighbouring Haughhead Colliery and the coal was later to be worked from Ross allowing Haughhead, and its line, to close.
