Name and dates

Ross South Signal Box

Opened on the Lesmahagow Railway.

Description

This box was at the south end of the main part of Ross Yard, just south of where the Haughhead Junction to Ferniegair Junction line passed underneath. The box controlled access to the south end of yard.

To the north looped lines of the yard ran north to Ross Junction on the west side of the line. On the east side there were single ended sidings, approached from the south and, just to their east, a loop which ran north to Ross Junction and Ross Colliery. This loop was the original course of the line.

To the south, on the west side, were some goods sidings belonging to Ferniegair [2nd] (closed 1876). A little to the south, also on the west side, was a loop for Ferniegair Colliery.

Ross South box was on the east side of the line. A footbridge crossed the line.

The line closed in 1964/65, the Ferniegair Junction to Haughhead Junction alignment surviving until 1968/69.

After closure the site became derelict.

The Ferniegair Junction to Haughhead Junction alignment re-opened in 2005 as part of the Larkhall line, on a slightly different alignment.
