Shieldmuir

Location type

Station

Name and dates

Shieldmuir (1990-)

Station code: SDM National Rail ScotRail
Where: North Lanarkshire, Scotland
Opened on the Wishaw and Coltness Railway.
Open on the Glasgow to Lanark.

Description

This is a minimal modern two platform station. The platforms are linked by a footbridge which predates the station. To the east is Shieldmuir Junction where the connection to Wishaw station leaves the line through Motherwell and the west end of the Royal Mail Scottish Distribution Centre loop connects to the main line.

Formerly this was a complicated location with many lines. The closure of the last of these, a loop on the south side serving Flemington Goods to the west and scrap sidings at the Inshaw Works (for the Ravenscraig Steel Works) left land vacant for the new station. To the west was Shields Colliery Junction, a little further away than Shieldmuir Junction.
