This is a two platform station. The signal box at the south east end dates from 1887, built for the North Eastern Railway.
The nearby Shildon Coal Drops, just to the south, are a form of coaling bench. Coal was dropped to the locomotives / tenders below.
NRM Shildon is just to the east on the site of part of Shildon Yard.
