Name and dates

Shildon Coal Drops (1847-1935)

Description

These drops, for coaling locomotives, were built for the Stockton and Darlington Railway around 1847. The remains consist of a bank supported by a stone built wall on its south side. Loaded coal wagons were shunted up the slope from the north west and the locomotives were filled in the sidings to the south. Iron hoppers were located above the sidings, allowing coal to be dropped from above. It fell out of use about 1935.
