This coal mine also produced clay for the neighbouring Southhook Fireclay Works, just to the east. Both works were served by sidings from South Hook Signal Box on the Busbie Branch (Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway) (Kilmarnock to Irvine line).
It closed in 1971.
The line of the Cunninghamhead and Southhook Collieries extended from the siding to the Overton mines to the north west ultimately making another connection at Stewarton to the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway.
