South Hook Signal Box

Location type

Name and dates

South Hook Signal Box (-1965)

Opened on the Busbie Branch (Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway).

Description

This signal box controlled a point of access to a colliery line to Southhook, Overton and Warwickhill Collieries from the Irvine to Crosshouse railway.

The box was on the north side of the line, west of the junction. The colliery line was accessed via a headshunt at Southhook Colliery, on the north side of the railway, which made a trailing connection to the westbound line. The headshunt remained in use after closure of the colliery.

The box burned down and was replaced in 1898.

The siding also survived the closure of the colliery line and served the Southhook Fireclay Works. The box was relocated further east and remained on the north side of the line closure to the siding.

The signal box main line closed in 1965 and is now a footpath.
