This was the works of J & A Taylor, James Taylor and Andrew Taylor, on Smith Street opposite Ayr station. It was a general engineering works; engineers, millwrights, marine equipment, stationary engines, mine winding engines and boilermakers.
Around 1869-1871 the works built a 0-4-0 saddle tank for the Dalmellington Iron Company. DL Smith notes that the company 'knew nothing of locomotives, and No 8 suffered accordingly'. The locomotive worked on the line from Sillyhole to Pennyvenie Colliery No 1, dating from 1868 (Dalmellington Iron Company (Phase 2)). No 8 was scrapped in 1912.
Later the works of John Wallace & Sons Ltd.
